The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a major change in the Class 12 revaluation process for 2026. Under the new revised policy, students applying for CBSE Class 12 re-evaluation will receive a full refund of the re-evaluation fee if their marks increase after the review process. The board has implemented this change in the post-result review system following concerns raised by students and parents over lower-than-expected scores under the newly introduced digital On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

The CBSE introduced the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system as an online method for evaluating answer sheets in board examinations. Under this system, scanned copies of students’ answer sheets are uploaded online, and examiners assess them digitally on a computer screen instead of checking physical copies manually.
The OSM system was implemented to make the evaluation process faster, more transparent, and error-free. It also helps reduce issues such as lost answer sheets, totalling mistakes, and inconsistencies in marking. Through digital evaluation, CBSE can monitor the checking process more effectively and ensure uniform assessment standards across examiners.
However, after the introduction of OSM, several students and parents raised concerns regarding lower-than-expected marks and possible evaluation inconsistencies. Following these concerns, CBSE revised its re-evaluation and fee refund policy for 2026 to provide greater transparency and support to students. According to CBSE’s latest notification:
If a student’s marks are revised upward (increase by even 1 mark) after the re-evaluation or verification process, the board will issue a full refund of the entire fee paid for those steps
If marks remain unchanged or decrease, the fee will not be refunded.
The refund rule applies to the revised post-result grievance system introduced after concerns regarding the new On-Screen Marking (OSM) process.

To ensure that no student is left behind due to financial constraints, the Ministry of Education has reduced the fees across all three stages of the review process:
Post-Result Activity | Old Fee | New Revised Fee (2026) |
|---|---|---|
Stage 1: Obtaining a Scanned Copy of Answer Sheets | Rs 700 per subject | Rs 100 per subject |
Stage 2: Verification of Marks / Issues Observed | Rs 500 per subject | Rs 100 per subject |
Stage 3: Re-evaluation / Rechecking | Rs 100 per question | Rs 25 per question |
Students should understand these key rules before applying:
Marks can increase, decrease, or remain the same after CBSE Class 12 re-evaluation.
The revised marks become final once the process is completed.
CBSE recommends first obtaining the scanned answer sheet and checking it carefully before requesting CBSE Class 12 re-evaluation.
CBSE 12th re-evaluation is allowed only for specific questions identified by the student.
If any answer was left unchecked, marking errors occurred, or step marking mistakes are found, marks may increase.
The CBSE 12th review process follows a sequence. They cannot jump straight to rechecking a specific question without going through the initial steps. Check the steps below.
Log in to the official portal (cbse.gov.in) and apply for a scanned copy by paying Rs 100 per subject. Students must verify that all pages, supplementary sheets, or graphs they submitted are fully visible and correctly scanned.
Apply for the CBSE 12th verification (Rs 100). The board checks for standard technical issues like unchecked answers, marks not carried forward to the cover page, totalling mistakes, or computer tabulation errors.
If students find an evaluation error, download the official CBSE Class 12 marking scheme. Students can challenge specific answers at Rs 25 per question. A subject expert committee will re-evaluate their responses against the official key, and this final decision is binding.
