There are a total of five Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) across India: Chail, Bengaluru, Belgaum, Dholpur, and Ajmer. RMS Chail is the oldest school among them which was started in 1925 in Jalandhar Cantt. Later, it was moved to MP, thereafter it was shifted to Chail in 1960.

All Rashtriya Military Schools in India are open for the children of Defence Service Officers and civilians. RMS admissions are provided to them in Classes 6 and 9 through an entrance test. However, these schools were started before Independence but these were reorganized in 1952. Later, the authorities renamed these schools to Rashtriya Military Schools.

RMS Bangalore

The Rashtriya Military School, Bangalore was founded on August 1, 1946. Students can get RMS, Bangalore admission from classes 6th to 9th in RMS Bengaluru. This school has facilities like labs, a library, a dormitory, a motivational hall and so on. After four years of following the ICSE syllabus, the school switched to the CBSE syllabus in 1967. The academic year for RMS Bengaluru starts in April and ends in March.

RMS Chail

Rashtriya Military School Chail, located at the Shimla Hills, is a residential English medium public school under the Ministry of Defence. RMS Chail has four different houses namely Nalanda, Taxila, Ujjain and Mithila house. The curriculum offers science subjects in Classes 11 and 12. The exams will be conducted as per the CBSE guidelines. The RMS chail has Classes VI to XII along with separate labs for physics, chemistry, biology, computer, Library, motivational hall, and auditorium.

RMS Dholpur

Rashtriya Military School Dholpur was established on July 16, 1962. It is the only RMS set up after Independence. RMS Dholpur follows the academic syllabus of CBSE, Delhi. The admission for the Classes in RMS Dholpur is based on the CET conducted by the administration. This CET for admission will be tentatively in December 2024.

RMS Ajmer

Rashtriya Military School Ajmer was founded in 1930. RMS Ajmer is an English medium school affiliated with CBSE, New Delhi. This is the only campus of RMS which is meant only for boys and the entry class as VI. RMS Ajmer also starts its academic year in April and ends in March like the other RMSs. The Rashtriya Military School Ajmer has many facilities like, a hostel, swimming pool, Library, and many more.

Admission to Rashtriya Military School

The Rashtriya Military School conducts the Common Entrance Test (CET) for admission to Class VI and IX which will be held tentatively in December 2024. The RMS admit card and the RMS CET results will be published on the official website. Students who clear their common entrance test will have to appear for an interview in the mentioned Rashtriya Military School and also should attend a medical exam at Military Hospitals. Finally, only the students who are fit in the medical exam and pass the interview will be on the merit list for the RMS admission.

Reservation for Rashtriya Military School Admission

70% of the seats are reserved for the children of JCOs (Junior Commissioned Officers) and ORs (Other Ranks) from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, including ex-servicemen. The remaining 30% are reserved for the children of officers from these forces, including retired officers, as well as for civilian children.

Additionally, a maximum of 50 seats across all classes in all five RMSs are set aside for the children of those killed in action. 27% of seats are reserved for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), 15% for SC, and 7.5% for ST candidates. For Classes VI and IX, 10% of the seats, or a maximum of 30 vacancies across all five RMSs, are reserved for girl candidates.
