    The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the detailed guidelines for the CBSE three-language policy 2026 under the National Education Policy 2020. The policy is being implemented from the 2026-27 academic year and aims to promote multilingual education for students. The CBSE Class 10th students will be exempted from the policy this year and will not be affected.

    For the current class batches of Class VII, VIII, and IX, they will not be required to give the board examination in the third language when they are promoted to Class 10th. Those who have taken two foreign languages will continue with the same, with one additional native Indian language (Bhartiya Bhasa). The objective of the CBSE three-language policy 2026 is to make language learning a meaningful, engaging, and enriching experience for the students and contribute to their holistic development.

    What is CBSE Three Language Policy 2026?

    The CBSE three-language policy 2026 mandates that students need to study three languages from the middle to secondary stages of their school. Here’s what students need to know about the policy.

    • At least two of these languages must be native Indian languages such as Hindi, regional languages or classical languages.

    • A foreign language such as French, German, or Spanish can only be studied as a third language if the other two are native Indian languages.

    • With the latest notice from the CBSE board, it has been clarified that there is no board examination for the third language at the Class 10th level.

    • All the assessments will be conducted internally by the respective schools.

    CBSE Three Language Policy 2026 Implementation

    The revised CBSE three-language policy 2026 will come into effect from the academic year 2026-27. Schools affiliated with CBSE will implement the revised language policy gradually according to the prescribed plan of CBSE. Teachers and students will be given sufficient time to adapt to the new requirements.

    Highlights of CBSE Three Language Policy 2026

    CBSE’s decision to implement the CBSE three-language policy 2026 has spread a debate among the students, parents, and educators. They are concerned over the academic pressure, cultural imposition and the disruption of the ongoing academic session. To clarify the benefits of the CBSE 3 language policy 2026, CBSE has introduced revised guidelines for the students.

    • Class 10th students exempted: The students who are currently in Class 10 are exempted from the new three-language policy. These students will appear in the board examination under the existing language scheme.

    • Three languages mandatory till Class 10: Students will study three languages up to Class 10. Out of three, two languages must be Indian languages.

    • No Board exam for third languages: There will be no board exam for the third language subjects. Schools will conduct the assessments internally. \

    • No Change for Existing Students: Students already studying under the previous language scheme will not be forced to change their language preference by their schools.

    • Policy changes for students from Class 7 to 9: Students who are currently in Class 7, 8, and 9 who are already studying two foreign languages or an existing language will be allowed to continue with the same until Class 10.
