Every year, many Class 5 students appear for the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) with the dream of getting admission into a Navodaya school. Along with the students, parents also have one common question in mind: Is coaching really needed to crack the JNVST exam? The answer is no. Many students clear the exam without joining any coaching classes. If a student starts preparation early and understands the concepts properly, then it will help them in their studies. For Class 5 students, too much pressure is not needed. A simple study routine and regular practice are enough.

For students of Class 6 for their admission to the respective Navodaya. Because of these facilities, many students and parents want to get admission to a Navodaya school.
One thing students and parents should know is that the exam is not only about remembering answers. It mainly checks how well a child can think, solve simple math questions, and understand what they read. Because of this, it is always better to start preparing a little early. When students practice regularly, these skills improve slowly with time, and they feel much more comfortable on the exam day.

Before you start studying, first know what comes in the exam. It makes your preparation much easier.
Section | Important Topics | Preparation Tip |
|---|---|---|
Mental Ability | Patterns, series, analogy, classification, puzzles, mirror images | Daily reasoning practice |
Arithmetic | Basic math, calculations, word problems (Class 5 level) | Concepts first, then speed |
Language | Reading, vocabulary, grammar, comprehension | Daily reading habit |
Don't start the preparation directly by giving mock tests. First, make the basics strong. If a student is still finding fractions, decimals, time, or simple calculations difficult, it is better to spend some time on those topics before moving ahead. Try to follow a simple daily routine. Even 30 to 40 minutes every day is much better than studying for long hours only once or twice a week. Choose a time that suits the child and follow it regularly.
While preparing, make sure the students solve questions every day. Just reading the chapter is not enough. Subjects like Maths and Reasoning become easier only when students keep practising. Keep one day every week only for revision. It helps children remember what they studied during the week and also lets them know which topics still need a little more practice.
This part has figure series, analogy, odd one out, mirror images, pattern questions, and some easy puzzles. In the beginning, many children feel this section is a little confusing, but after some practice, it becomes much easier.
The good thing is that most children start liking this section because it feels more like solving small puzzles than studying from a book.
Start with easy questions and ask your child to find the pattern in their own way.
You can also play small "odd one out" games at home using daily things around you.
Solving 5 to 10 questions every day is enough. With regular practice, both speed and accuracy improve slowly.
If your child gives a wrong answer, don't tell the correct answer immediately.
First ask how they reached that answer. Many times, they understand their own mistake while explaining it.
The important topics in arithmetic are number systems, fractions, decimals, time, measurement, and word problems up to the Class 5 level. Many students know the answers but lose marks because they solve them in a hurry. Tell your child to read the question properly first, look at the numbers carefully, and then decide which operation to use.
Tables up to 15 should become easy to remember because they help in almost every math question.
Fractions become much easier when children learn them with real-life examples like cutting a pizza, apple, or roti into equal parts.
Instead of giving too much work, let your child solve around 10 math questions every day. Daily practice helps more than studying for long hours once in a while.
Certain questions involving word problems need more attention than other general questions. Words like "total," "remaining," "shared," and “difference” help children understand which operation they need to apply to solve the problem.
The language test checks whether a child can read a passage and understand it. There's no shortcut here-only the reading habit.
Ask your child to read one short story, newspaper piece, or textbook page aloud daily.
After reading, ask three simple questions: What happened? Who was it about? Why?
Make a habit of writing two new words daily in a notebook and try to learn their meanings.
Practice one comprehension passage after a gap of one or two days.
Also focus on basic grammar topics like nouns, verbs, tenses, and sentence correction.
Tip: A child who spends some time reading every day feels more comfortable while solving the language section.
A Class 5 student should not prepare like a board exam student. Studying for a short time with full focus works better, and completing school homework should always be the priority.
For busy school days, students should follow a 30-minute plan in which they spend 10 minutes each on all 3 sections for studying and solving questions. While during holiday or less busy school days, spend 15-20 min on each section and also revise your previous studies and mistakes.
Books matter, but how your child uses them matters more. NCERT Class 5 books are your foundation. While studying from NCERT, solve every exercise in the math book. First clear the concepts from NCERT textbooks and school notes, then study from the study guides. Previous year question papers show the real difficulty and repeat similar patterns year after year. Solve one paper every two weeks from the second month onward, then review the mistakes carefully. Mock tests should begin after basics are strong-usually in the final three to four months. Start untimed, then move to full timed papers, sitting in one go like the real exam. Practice worksheets work best in short bursts. If fractions feel shaky, do only fraction worksheets for a week until confidence returns.
Yes, and thousands of children do it every year through self-study. Self-study works beautifully at this age because the Navodaya syllabus for 6th class 2027 is small and easy for parents to guide. A parent who sits with a child for 30 minutes a day is often more effective than any coaching class. Your role is simple: fix the routine, check that practice is happening, celebrate small wins, and stay patient with mistakes. Coaching can help only if both parents genuinely can't spare time or if your child needs a fixed classroom schedule to stay motivated. Even then, coaching can only support daily practice; it can never replace it.
Tip: A calm home routine can be more powerful than a crowded classroom.
Many children lose confidence not because the exam is hard but because preparation was never planned properly. Watch out for these:
Starting late and squeezing everything into the last two months
Ignoring Mental Ability—the section that carries the most weight
Practising math without truly understanding the concepts
Studying without weekly revision, so topics keep getting forgotten
Solving too few mock tests, leaving the child nervous about the paper format
Not checking mistakes after practice
Comparing your child with neighbours or relatives—this kills confidence faster than any tough question
Long study hours without breaks. A tired 10-year-old learns almost nothing.
The last three months are for sharpening, not learning new things.
Month 1: Revise all three sections and finish previous year's papers. Focus extra time on weak areas.
Month 2: Every week, students should give one mock test. After each mock test, students should understand what mistakes were made and discuss those mistakes with parents and teachers. It will also help in managing time better while solving questions in the exam.
Month 3: In this month, at least 2 mock tests within a week should be solved by the students. Along with this, regular quick revision should be there for remembering all the important topics. Students should make a habit of solving easy questions first in the exam; the difficult questions can be solved later as well.
In the last week of the 3rd month, students should keep themselves fresh by doing simple revision and taking proper rest. Sleep, food, and calmness are also part of preparation. A calm child performs far better than a stressed one.
