A fresh controversy has erupted around the CBSE Class 12 re-evaluation process after a student alleged that the Physics answer sheet uploaded during the post-result review did not belong to him. The student claimed the scanned answer booklet differed from the one he had written, raising concerns about the integrity of CBSE's newly introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) system. The student also claims that his marks did not increase after he applied for re-evaluation. However, CBSE has stated that his score increased by 9 marks.
The controversy comes amid broader scrutiny of CBSE's digital evaluation system. Earlier, several students had alleged issues such as mismatched scanned answer sheets, missing pages, delayed access to photocopies, and discrepancies in uploaded answer books. However, many of these claims remain unverified; they have led to increased public attention on the board's evaluation mechanism.
The CBSE Class 12 re-evaluation controversy has now again intensified after a dispute between the board and student Vedant Srivastava over his Physics marks.
Vedant claims that the 9-mark increase in his Physics score resulted from an administrative correction made after an alleged answer sheet mix-up, before the re-evaluation process began. However, CBSE maintains that its records reflect the increase as part of the student's overall post-result score revision, leading to the widely debated "11 marks vs. 2 marks" controversy on social media.
| Subject | Original Score (Theory) | Revised Score (Theory) | Board's Stance | Student's Stance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Physics | 35 | 44 | +9 marks via the overall re-evaluation data cycle. | 0 marks from re-evaluation. This was a rectification of their internal mix-up before re-evaluation. |
Maths | 46 | 47 | +1 mark via re-evaluation. | +1 mark via re-evaluation. |
Computer science | 61 | 62 | +1 mark via re-evaluation. | +1 mark via re-evaluation. |
Total change | +11 marks | +2 marks (excluding the mix-up fix) |
In May 2026, Vedant Srivastava went viral on social media after alleging that the scanned Physics answer booklet provided to him via CBSE's post-result verification process did not match his handwriting. Other students report similar experiences under the board's newly introduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
In late May 2026, CBSE acknowledged an "inadvertent exchange" of answer sheets during the scanning/uploading phase. They emailed Vedant his authentic Physics script. This correction updates his Physics score from 65 to 74 (reflecting a 9-mark increase in the theory portion from 35 to 44).
In June 2026, despite receiving the correct script, Vedant finds separate evaluation issues within his actual paper and officially applies for the re-evaluation of 11 specific questions across subjects.
In June 28, 2026, Vedant posts a video stating his CBSE 12th re-evaluation results yielded only a 2-mark increase overall (1 mark each in Mathematics and Computer Science), with 0 marks added to Physics.
Hours later, the Ministry of Education and CBSE publicly labelled his claim a "blatant lie," releasing data showing a total 11-mark increase across three subjects.
The case gained widespread attention on social media, where the student and his family questioned the evaluation process and demanded an explanation. Following the complaint, CBSE reviewed the matter and issued a revised CBSE Class 12 result. However, the board stated that the student's Physics marks remained unchanged after the review, despite correcting certain procedural issues related to the answer sheet.
According to CBSE, it has maintained that its evaluation process includes multiple quality checks and that if any genuine discrepancies are addressed through verification and re-evaluation. The board has urged students and parents to rely on official communications rather than unverified social media posts.
Although Vedant's case has been resolved after his original answer sheets were reviewed, the episode has raised broader concerns about CBSE's implementation of the On-Screen Marking (OSM) digital evaluation system. In response, the Ministry of Education has engaged technical experts from IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur to audit the post-examination digital workflow and recommend measures to prevent future issues related to answer sheet scanning, tagging, and uploading.
