About Space Week

World Space Week is a global celebration of science and technology and their contributions to human progress. In 1999, the UN General Assembly agreed that the week of October 4–10 would be recognized as World Space Week. These dates honour two occasions—The first man-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched on October 4, 1957, paving the path for space exploration. and on October 10, 1967, a treaty governing state activities in space exploration and peaceful uses of the moon and other celestial bodies was signed. Throughout the world, space agencies, aerospace firms, educational institutions, planetariums, museums, and astronomy clubs hold space education and outreach activities during World Space Week.
