Students who meet the IOQM 2026 qualification criteria can appear for the RMO exam. Scoring the minimum qualifying marks in IOQM is necessary, but it does not guarantee selection for the second stage. The final selection depends on the prescribed regional cut-offs and category-wise rules.
The following are the main eligibility and selection criteria for RMO 2026:
Minimum qualifying marks: Students must score at least 10% of the total marks in the IOQM 2026 paper to be considered for RMO selection. However, this is not the only qualifying condition.
Category A: Students enrolled in Classes 8, 9, 10 or 11 for IOQM 2026 will be classified as Category A.
Category B: Students enrolled in Class 12 for IOQM 2026 will be classified as Category B.
Category A selection: From each region, the top 200 students in Category A will qualify for RMO 2026, including students tied at the 200th position.
Category B selection: From each region, the top 40 students in Category B will qualify for RMO 2026, including students tied at the 40th position.
Additional selection for girls: Five additional girl students from Category A will qualify from each region under the Girls' quota, irrespective of the number of girls already selected among the top 200 Category A students.
No separate Girls' quota for Category B: Girl students in Category B must qualify within the top 40 students of their category.
Note: Overseas students eligible to appear for IOQM 2026 will not be counted while determining the regional cut-offs of the region from which they appear. Students should check the final IOQM scores and the official qualification information to confirm whether they have been selected for RMO 2026.

Students should practise solving mathematical problems with complete explanations. Presenting a logical argument and showing the steps used to reach a conclusion are important parts of a proof-based examination. The RMO exam tests students' mathematical reasoning and ability to present clear, logical solutions. Unlike examinations that primarily require numerical answers or multiple-choice responses, RMO questions require detailed proofs. The main details of the RMO 2026 exam pattern are given below.
