The Assam HS Biology practical examination carries 30 marks, divided equally between Botany Practical (15 marks) and Zoology Practical (15 marks). Each practical includes 12 marks for practical performance and 3 marks for the practical record book.
Students are required to perform practical activities related to plant reproduction, cytology, ecology, and genetics. The practical syllabus includes:
Study of reproductive parts of different flowers
Pollination by wind and insects
Pollen germination and pollen tube growth
Study of fruits and seeds at different developmental stages
Mitosis in onion root tip and meiosis through permanent slides
Controlled pollination (emasculation, bagging and tagging)
Soil pH and water-holding capacity experiments
Study of xerophytic and aquatic plants and their adaptations
Plant population density and frequency using the quadrat method
Study of analogous and homologous organs in plants
Maintenance of a practical record book
The Zoology practical syllabus focuses on genetics, human health, ecology, environmental studies, and animal adaptations. Major practical activities include:
Study of gamete development using mammalian reproductive tissue slides
Observation of blastula stage through permanent slides
Mendelian inheritance using seeds
Preparation of pedigree charts
Identification of disease-causing organisms and related symptoms
