CBSE Clarification Over Marks for Extra Attempted Questions - Evaluation Rules for Class 12 Results 2026

Priyanka DasguptaUpdated on 05 Jun 2026, 12:21 PM IST

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released an official statement for the students clarifying the totalling of marks when extra questions are attempted. With the ongoing CBSE 12th reverification 2026 process, students have raised a discrepancy with the totalling and calculation of the actual answers and the marks shown as total marks obtained. According to CBSE, if a student answers extra questions, based on the evaluation system, the best score among the attempted options will be considered for the final score.

CBSE 12th Result Evaluation Policy for Extra Questions

CBSE, in their official statement, explains that there are many internal choices given in the question paper for the students to choose from while answering the questions.

    • Many times, students answer more than the required number of questions.

    • Based on the CBSE evaluation policy, they have taken the best marks obtained by the students.

    • These questions are mentioned as ‘Over Attempt’.

    • In such cases, the system considers the better of the two marks for calculating the CBSE 12th results.

    • Such marks, which were not considered, are shown as star marked asterisk (*)

Along with this, the board also provided an example for the students to understand the policy better.

‘There is an internal choice in question 31 (a) or (b), which means a student has to attempt either the subparts of question 31 (a) or the subparts of question 31(b). The marks obtained by the candidate in Question 31(a) are 3, while those obtained in Question 31(b) are 2. Hence, 3 marks awarded for question 31(a) have been taken in the total, and there is an asterisk mark on 31 (b)_i_l and 31(b)_ii_Il with a footnote which reads marked marks are omitted for totalling. Thus, the total of the candidate becomes 43.5, which has been rounded off to 44.
