This year, the summit's theme is ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’, inspired by the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Humanity First’ and a people-centric approach. During the launch, the External Affairs Minister also introduced the BRICS India website, brics2026.gov.in.

What is the BRICS Summit?
The BRIC was an alliance between Brazil, Russia, India, and China to develop new financial institutions and reduce the dependency on US or Western powers. BRIC was officially formed in 2006, during the first meeting of its foreign ministers at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. The inauguration of BRICS took place in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009.

BRICS Members and Partner Countries
BRIC had only four member countries during the inauguration, including Brazil, Russia, India, and China. BRIC expanded into BRICS as South Africa joined hands with the foreign ministers in 2010, adapting to the acronym ‘BRICS’. The full form of BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Between 2024 and 2025, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Indonesia also became full members of BRICS. Later in 2025, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam joined BRICS as Partner Countries.

The Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has declared a holiday on September 11, 2026, in all government offices, autonomous bodies, and public sector organisations for preparations for the BRICS Summit. Schools in Delhi will also be closed on September 11, 2026 (Friday).
