Introduction

In India, currently, 106 National Parks are situated in different parts of the country. National parks are areas that are separated out by the government of the nation for the natural environment’s protection. There are many factors an area could be separated for. They are public recreation, enjoyment or coexisting plants and animals to protect them. In India, National Parks are IUCN category II protected lands. IUCN stands for “International Union of Conservation of Nature”. The first national park in India was designated in 1936. The name of this National Park was Jim Corbett National Park. The number of National Parks increased to five by 1970. After India enacted the Wildlife Protection Act in 1972 along with Project Tiger in 1973, the number of National Parks increased.

These 106 National Parks cover 44,378 square kilometres. This is 1.35% of the area of the country. Along with that, 75 more National Parks are to be established.

  1. Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand, situated in 1936.

  2. Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan was situated in the tenth century.

  3. Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

  4. Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

  5. Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

  6. Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

  7. Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal.

  8. Valley of Flowers National Park in Uttarakhand.

  9. Bandipur National Park in Karnataka.

  10. Nagahole National Park in Karnataka.
