All of you must be aware of the Indian and international place value systems. Nine places are divided into four periods in the Indian number system. These periods are ones, thousands, lakhs, and crores whereas in the international number system these nine values are divided into three periods. These periods are ones, thousands and millions. You might be knowing that the international number system and the Indian number system can be converted to each other. For example hundred thousand can also be written as lakh in the international number system. Lakh is used in the Indian number system whereas million is used in the International number system. To know more about lakhs and millions continue reading this article.
It is the unit in the Indian number system which is equal to one hundred thousand in the international unit system. It can also be written as 105 in scientific notation. It is a 2,2,3 grouping in the Indian system and is written as 1,00,000. This is used in the official context in India as well as in many other countries such as Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan.
It is a unit in the international place value System which can also be written as 10 lakh in the Indian place value system. It can also be written as 106 in scientific notation. It can be used in both long and short-numbering systems.
To know the relationship between million and lakh, let's first write them in scientific notation. 1 lakh can be written as 105 whereas 1 million can be written as 106. 1 million is equal to 10 lakh.
Hence, 10 lakhs make a million.
As we have already seen in the previous paragraph that one million is equal to 10 lakhs. So, to convert a million into lakh, multiply it by 10.
1 million = 10 lakh
Examples
Convert 4 million into lakhs
1 million = 10 lakhs
4 million × 10 = 40 lakhs.
Convert 85 million into lakhs
1 million = 10 lakhs
85 million × 10 = 850 lakhs
As we have seen in the above paragraph, 1 million is equal to 10 lakh, or it can also be written as 1 lakh is equal to 0.1 million.
So, to convert lakhs into millions, divide it by 10.
1 lakh = 0.1 million.
Examples
Convert 67 lakh into Million
1 lakh = 0.1 million,
67 lakh = 67×0.1 million
Hence, 67 lakh = 6.7 million.
Convert 78 lakh into a million
1 lakh = 0.1 million
78 lakh = 78×0.1 million
Hence, 78 lakh = 7.8 million.
