There are 3 feet in 1 yard. Conversion is a branch of Mathematics, used for measurement in day-to-day life. Yard-feet conversion is used for measuring the heights of buildings, bridges, the city’s height above sea level, etc.
Yard was originally the length of a man’s belt. In the 12th century, King Henry 1 of England made a yard as a measuring unit by fixing the distance between his nose and thumb of his stretched-out arm as a yard. It is a unit of measurement for measuring length. The symbol “yd” is used to represent the yard. A yard is equal to 3 feet or 36 inches. This is a standard measuring unit used for conversion worldwide. This conversion system is accepted by both US and imperial customary systems of measurement.
Feet is also a unit of measuring distance or length. It is derived after the International Yard and Pound Agreement of 1959. In both customary and imperial systems of units, one foot comprises 12 inches and one yard comprises 3 feet. A foot is represented as “ft” symbolically and is also denoted by an apostrophe (‘).
For example,
2 feet can be represented as
2 feet = 2ft = 2’
Step 1 Take the number in yards for conversion.
Step 2 As we know, 1yd = 3ft. Use this for converting the given number into feet.
1\: {yd}=3\: {ft}
Step 3 Multiplying the given number with 3ft will give us the given number in feet.
Convert yds into ft.
To convert the given number into ft we will use the following steps:
Step 1 Take the number 5yd for conversion.
Step 2 Use 1yd = 3ft for converting a number into feet.
Step 3 Multiply 5yd with 3ft to get the desired result i.e.,
Ans 5 \times 3 \{ft}=15 \{ft}
This table is used for quick conversions and calculations. Some of the most commonly used values for the yard-to-feet conversion are shown below:
YARD | FEET |
0yd | 0ft |
1yd | 3ft |
2yd | 6ft |
3yd | 9ft |
4yd | 12ft |
5yd | 15ft |
6yd | 18ft |
7yd | 21ft |
8yd | 24ft |
9yd | 27ft |
10yd | 30ft |
11yd | 33ft |
12yd | 36ft |
13yd | 39ft |
14yd | 42ft |
15yd | 45ft |
16yd | 48ft |
17yd | 51ft |
18yd | 54ft |
19yd | 57ft |
20yd | 60ft |
30yd | 90ft |
100yd | 300ft |
1000yd | 3000ft |
We can also convert a number from feet to the yard by dividing the number in feet by 3. Similarly, we can convert sq ft to sq yd by dividing the given number by 9.
Following are the steps involved in converting sq yd into sq feet:
Step 1 Take the number in sq yd for conversion.
Step 2 As we know, 1yd = 3ft
By squaring both sides, we get
\text { 1 sq yd }=9 \text { sq } f t
Step 3 Multiply 9 with the given number to get the number in sq ft.
Convert 5 sq ft in sq yd.
Step 1 Given the number is 5 sq yd.
Step 2 Use this for converting the given number, 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft
Step 3 5 × 9 sq ft = 45 sq ft
Ans 5 \times 9{sqft}=45 {sq{ft}
The conversion table for some most commonly used values is given below in the table for quick and easy calculations.
Square Yard | Square Feet |
0 sq yd | 0 sq ft |
1 sq yd | 9 sq ft |
2 sq yd | 18 sq ft |
3 sq yd | 27 sq ft |
4 sq yd | 36 sq ft |
5 sq yd | 45 sq ft |
6 sq yd | 54 sq ft |
7 sq yd | 63 sq ft |
8 sq yd | 72 sq ft |
9 sq yd | 81 sq ft |
10 sq yd | 90 sq ft |
A square yard can also be represented as 2 yds. Similarly, sq ft can be represented as 2 ft.
Yard to feet conversions will help us to measure distances in different units for the needs accordingly. For some complex problems or for measuring long distances we may need to convert square yards to square feet and vice-versa.
