Introduction

There are a total of 33 Elephant Reserves in India. The population of Elephants in India is about 27312 as per the 2017 census. Elephants are known as the National Heritage Animals of India. It was declared in 2010, on the recommendations of a standing committee of the National Board for Wildlife. It was a great step taken by the Indian government that was done to ensure the proper protection of elephants must be provided before their numbers start to fall like tigers. An Elephant is the largest land animal. They need a large area to live in and have high requirements for food and water. And therefore, it is a difficult task to shelter and protects them, so the protection of elephants can be done properly in forests, under some conditions, and as per the guidance of the Government of India. Guidelines refer to the Wildlife Protection Act, of 1972.

There are various reasons behind the protection of elephants. Elephants in India were endangered for a long time. Human-Elephant conflict, the conversion of habitats into Farmlands, and the absence of Elephant corridors in India are a few main reasons for the declining population of elephants. The Indian Government has taken various steps for protecting the Wildlife of the nation. A project Elephant was launched in 1992, by the Government of India. The project was all about the strategies that can help in Wildlife conservation, especially the Elephants.

Haathi Mere Saathi Campaign

In partnership with the Wildlife Trust of India and the Ministry of Environment and Forests, has started a campaign, Haathi Mere Saathi. The goal of the campaign was to spread awareness and forge a friendship between the local population and elephants. This campaign was launched for the welfare of the Elephants, and to protect and conserve the Elephants in India. It was launched on May 24, 2011, in Delhi, at Elephant-8 Ministerial Meetings. Thailand, Tanzania, India, Botswana, Kenya, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Republic of Congo are a part of the Elephant-8 Ministerial Meeting.

Elephant Task Force

the Human-Elephant Conflict and vindictive killing of elephants induced the government to establish the Elephant Task Force, along with the lines of the Tiger Task Force. The purpose of the Elephant Task Force is the long-term conservation of Elephants. Dr Mahesh Rangarajan headed the ETF. He was a political analyst and a wildlife historian. The rest members of the ETF were elephant biologists, animal welfare activists, and a veterinarian. India has about 25000 to 29000 elephants in the Wild. There are about 1200 Tusker elephants left in India. The project elephant is examined as a success in the vision of many conservationists, as it kept the population of Elephants in India at a sustainable and stable level.
