There has been a 25 per cent increase in the number of schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) across India in the last four years since 2018. While CBSE schools outside India showed an increase of 15.86 per cent in the same period. In India in 2021, a total of 26,641 schools are affiliated to the CBSE board. Out of which a majority of them, i.e. 15.4 per cent are in Uttar Pradesh,.
The CBSE board is a national level board which aims to achieve quality learning among students. It is considered to be the most eminent and most widely acknowledged education boards in India. Compared to other education boards prevalent in the country, the CBSE has the highest number of schools under its guidance.

Each year the number increases but in the year 2020, the number of CBSE affiliated schools showed a very sharp increase in India by more than 3,000 schools. An increase of 14 percentage points in the number of schools affiliated was seen that year.

By the end of March 2022, CBSE had almost 27,000 schools in India, out of which more than 78 percent schools were independent schools.

Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh are the top five states in terms of population. Out of these only Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are in the top five states in terms of highest number of CBSE schools, and Maharashtra ranks among the top 10 states.
