There are three modes of Heat transfer: Conduction, Convection and Radiation. Heat can be transferred by any matter composed of atoms and molecules. At any given time, the particles are in various states of motion. Heat or thermal energy is produced by the movement of molecules and atoms, and it is present in all matter. The greater the movement of molecules, the greater the heat energy.
The transfer of heat energy from one region to another as a result of a temperature gradient is referred to as heat transfer. In practice, heat transfer always occurs from the high-temperature region to the low- temperature region.
The following three modes are used to transfer heat energy from one region to another.
Conductive heat transfer: The conduction form of heat transfer occurs when heat transfers from one part of a substance to another without the movement of the substance's molecules.
In this mode, the heat transfer rate, or the rate of heat conduction along the substance, is affected by the temperature gradient.
Examples:
Ironing is an example of conduction because heat is transferred from the iron to the clothes.
Heat is transmitted from hands to ice cubes, causing an ice cube to melt when held in hands.
Heat conduction through the sand on beaches. This is possible during the summer. Sand is an excellent heat conductor.
Convection Heat Transfer: The convection mode of heat transfer occurs when heat is transferred from one part of a substance or fluid to another because of the actual motion of the molecules. The rate of heat transfer in this method is primarily determined by the difference in fluid density at different temperatures.
Examples:
Water boils because molecules that are denser move to the bottom while molecules that are less dense move to the top, resulting in a circular motion of the molecule that heats the water.
Warm water moves towards the poles as it approaches the equator, while cooler water moves away from the poles.
Radiation: The radiation mode of heat transfer occurs when heat is transferred from the heating source to the substance to be heated without direct contact between them. The heat transfer via radiation is affected by the surface.
Examples:
Radiation can be seen in the form of microwave radiation emitted by an oven.
UV rays emitted by the sun are an example of radiation.
Radiation can be seen in the discharge of alpha particles during the decay of Uranium-238 into Thorium-234.
We conclude that heat is a type of energy that can be transferred from a hot body to a cold body or from higher to lower temperatures via three different modes. Total heat transfer is the sum of heat transferred by each of the three heat transfer modes: conduction, convection, and radiation.
