My Aunt’s Story

I was born and brought up in Mumbai, Maharashtra. My mother however belongs to Rajasthan. Once, when I was 20 years old, we visited my mother’s hometown. There was a celebration going on but I was unaware of what it was. I had very little connection to anyone from my maternal family. I always thought they were way too strict and harsh. However, I always loved my aunt. She was an amazing human and originally belonged to Gujarat. As soon as we reached my mother’s house I began looking for her.

After searching quite a bit I found her in the storeroom, curled up and crying hard. I quickly went up to her after shutting the door of the storeroom and enquired about her messed-up state. On talking to her, I got to know the function we were attending was of my uncle’s remarriage. On further probation, I got to know that he was getting remarried for a baby and my aunt had undergone abortion 4 times because she had girls in her womb. I cried too for her and for the children she lost, and for the hardships she underwent.

However, it was time for some action. I straight up called the police and complained about my maternal relatives to them. The police reached us for help and the marriage was cancelled.

I told my mother all that I got to know from my aunt and she was shocked herself. She was unable to believe what she heard. My mother was scared but also proud of me for being so bold. Later, I along with my mother and aunt returned to Mumbai. My mom and I helped my aunt to take up the reins of her life in her hand, start afresh and see where her life leads her to.
