A Pentagon is a geometrical figure having five sides. The pentagon is derived from a Greek term called Pente, meaning 5. So a pentagon is a five-sided polygon. A polygon is a series of straight lines joining to form a closed structure, and for a pentagon, the number of straight lines is 5. The sum of the angles present in the interior of this five-sided polygon is 540°.

Types Of Pentagons

  1. Regular Pentagons

  2. Equilateral Pentagons

  3. Cyclic Pentagons

  4. General convex pentagons

Regular Pentagons

Regular pentagons will have five lines of reflectional symmetry (where the figure does not change during reflection) and rotational symmetry (which means that the figure looks the same even after undergoing a partial turn). The diagonals of a regular pentagon are said to be in a golden ratio (where their ratio remains the same as the ratio of the sum to the larger of the two quantities). A regular pentagon is easily constructible using a compass and a straight edge, a method also known as Euclidean or classical construction. There are different construction methods, including the Richmond method, Euclid's method, and physical construction methods.

Equilateral Pentagons

An equilateral pentagon Is a type of pentagon having all five sides of equal length. Although, in equilateral pentagons, it is not necessary to have all the internal angles equal. But, all sides are of equal length.

Cyclic Pentagons

This is the type of pentagon inscribed inside a circle, usually called the circumcircle. The circumcircle passes through all five vertices of the pentagon.

General Convex Pentagons

In the case of these pentagons, the sum of the squares of the diagonals is less than 3 times the sum of the squares of the sides.

Examples

Different types of pentagons can be observed in our daily life. This includes a cross-section of okra, which shows a pentagonal structure. Some flowers, like the morning glory, also have a similar design; Starfruit and the gynoecium of an apple which also shows a star shape resembles a pentagon. Some animals like Sea stars, brittle stars, and sea urchins also show similar structures.

Conclusion

Thus, we can conclude that a pentagon is a polygon with 5 numbers of sides.
