The term "prime number" refers to any positive integer that can only be divided by one and by that same number itself. i.e., a prime number cannot be divided by any number other than itself and 1. This shows that any other integer other than 1 and the number itself cannot be used to divide these prime numbers without leaving a remainder.
If an integer has precisely two positive divisors or factors, it is considered to be a prime number. As a result of only being divisible by 1 and 13, 13, is a prime number. While 15, which has more than two factors and is divisible by the numbers 1, 3, 5, and 15, is not a prime number.
The fundamental theorem of arithmetic asserts that every natural number larger than 1 is either a prime itself or can be factored as a product of primes that is unique up to their order. As a result, prime numbers play a significant role in number theory.
The smallest prime number is 2. It is also the only even prime number; all other even numbers contain at least two factors, making them divisible by themselves.
