The speed of light can be calculated mathematically using the formula:
v = d / t

For example, if we know the distance between two points and the time it takes for light to travel that distance, we can calculate the speed of light as follows:
v = d / t = 93 million miles / (8 minutes and 20 seconds) = 299,792,458 m/s
In this calculation, the distance is expressed in miles, and the time is expressed in minutes and seconds. To obtain the speed in meters per second, we need to convert both the distance and the time to the same units.

Why is it believed that sunlight needs approx eight minutes to reach Earth? However, is that photons are the form in which light travels. Consider the sun as a sphere-shaped gun that fires photons in all directions. These photons, which are also known as "rays of light," move in straight lines at the speed of light. When light is said to travel from the sun to the earth in approximately 8 minutes, it refers to the time it takes for photons travelling at that speed to cover that distance.
Even if the sun were to hypothetically cease emitting light and cease shooting these photons, the photons that it has already launched less than eight minutes ago are still travelling and will still reach the earth. The sun will stop emitting photons for 8 minutes before we on Earth stop receiving them and realize that the sun has stopped emitting them.
