A gamete is a reproductive cell of an animal or plant. Sperm and ova are the names for the male and female gametes of animals. The sperm and ova are haploid cells because they have one copy of each chromosome in each cell. During fertilization, a sperm and an ovum come together to produce a new diploid organism.
A pollen grain is a small structure that contains an androecium, which is a flower's male reproductive system. Cytoplasm, the tube cell, which transforms into a pollen tube, and the generative cell, which releases the sperm nuclei, are all present in the pollen grain's interior.
Pollen grains, which are male microgametophytes that form male gametes in seed plants, are a powdery material (sperm cells). As pollen grains go from the stamens to the pistil of flowering plants or from the male cone to the female cone of coniferous plants, sporopollenin forms a tough coat to protect the gametophytes.
The male gamete is not present in pollen, to the best of our knowledge. Each pollen grain contains generative (reproductive) cells as well as vegetative (non-reproductive) cells, the majority of which are only one in blooming plants but multiple in other seed plants. In flowering plants, the vegetative tube cell produces the pollen tube, while the generative cell splits to produce the two sperm nuclei.
A single pollen particle in a flowering plant creates two male gametes. When pollen grains reach the two-celled stage, pollen sacs are opened, and the generative cell divides once more to produce two male gametes. Then the sac receives the discharged embryos. They mix with female gametes to create an endosperm and an embryo (egg) (central cells).
Once pollination is finished, the pollen tube ascends through the style and stigma and moves towards the ovules in the ovaries. Pollen grains split into new germ cells. Two sperm cells are discharged and go via the pollen tube.
Four pollen grains are produced by single meiosis. As a result, meiosis generates a total of eight male gametes and pollen grains form male gametes.
Palynology, the study of pollen, is crucial to the fields of forensics, paleoecology, paleontology, and archaeology. Pollen is utilized in cross-pollination to move haploid male genetic material from the anther to the stigma of two different flowers. The pollen is transferred from the anther to the stigma of the same flower when self-pollination takes place.
