Quintal is a unit used to measure mass. Although meaning the same, it is referred to differently in different regions. In British English, it is referred to as a hundredweight; in American English, this is known as 100 kilograms.
The concept of the quintal is not a standardised system included in the International System of Units. Earlier quintals were weighed differently and these differences came based on the measurements of the local pounds. Basically, the definition of Quintal has been defined as 100 units of weight measurement. So, In different countries the units of weight measurement were different. For example, British Pounds in Britain, Kgs in America, Spanish Pounds in Spain, and so on. Thus, the value of a quintal in different countries was different.
Earlier, this measurement was mainly used for measuring masses for agricultural products. In certain other places, the 100-kilogram concept was introduced through the Islamic trade. These include Albania, Ethiopia, and even India. This same measurement is used differently in other parts of the world. In France, a quintal was 49.951 kg, in Spain 46.014 kg, in Portugal, 58.75 kg, and in Italy, it was 32.67kg. In the Soviet Union countries, the measurement used to weigh the agricultural products included centner per hectare and 100-kilogram centner. This is still used in some areas of the soviet union.
The term 100 kilograms or 1 quintal concept is still different from the names used in other places. The definition of one quintal was brought to the United States in 1866. Although they defined a quintal as 100 kilograms, it is no longer used by them. Whereas in some countries, like in India, Poland, Slovakia, France, Italy, and the Czech Republic, it is commonly used. In other countries, the same concept exists with a different spelling using Quintal. This is seen in countries including Brazil, South America, and some South African countries.
