Thus, in the 1795 edict, the terms gramme and kilogramme took the place of gravet and gram, respectively.

When the word was first used in English in 1795, Great Britain accepted the French spelling, while the United States adopted the spelling kilogramme.

Both spellings are used in the United Kingdom, though "kilogramme" has become significantly more prevalent. Neither spelling is prohibited by UK legislation, which governs the units to be used when trading by weight or measure.

The French word kilo, a contraction of the kilogramme, was introduced into the English language in the 19th century and has since been used to denote both kilogrammes and kilometres. Although The Economist, for example, accepts kilogramme as a substitute, according to the Canadian government's Premium Plus system, "SI (International System of Units) usage, followed in scientific and technical writing," it is prohibited, and it is referred to as "a common informal name" in Russ Rowlett's Dictionary of Units of Measurement.
