It is a measurement unit that is widely used in research, engineering, and commerce around the world. Its literal translation is "1,000 grams."
As of the 2019 redefinition of the SI base units, the kilogramme is defined in terms of the second and the metre, both of which are based on fundamental physical constants. This allows a metrology lab equipped with the necessary equipment to calibrate a mass measurement device, such as a Kibble balance, in order to determine a precise kilogramme mass.
In 1795, the kilogramme was defined as the mass of one litre of water. The modern definition of a kilogramme matches the original to within 30 parts per million. In 1799, the platinum Kilogramme des Archives took over as the unit of mass. In 1889, the International Prototype of the Kilogram (IPK), a platinum-iridium cylinder, was adopted as the metric system's reference unit of mass, and it remained in use until the SI basic units were redefined in 2019.
The only base SI unit other than the kilogramme that has a SI prefix (kilo) in its name is the kilogramme. The term kilogramme or kilogramme is derived from the French kilogramme, which was a learned coinage that prefixed the Greek stem o khilioi, meaning "a thousand," to gramma, a Late Latin term for "a tiny weight," which itself was borrowed from Greek.
In the Decree of 18 Germinal, which amended the interim system of units adopted by the French National Convention two years earlier and defined the grave as the weight (poids) of a cubic centimetre of water, equivalent to 1/1000 of a grave, the term kilogramme was first used in French legislation. Thus, in the 1795 edict, the terms gramme and kilogramme took the place of gravet and gram, respectively.
When the word was first used in English in 1795, Great Britain accepted the French spelling, while the United States adopted the spelling kilogramme.
Both spellings are used in the United Kingdom, though "kilogramme" has become significantly more prevalent. Neither spelling is prohibited by UK legislation, which governs the units to be used when trading by weight or measure.
The French word kilo, a contraction of the kilogramme, was introduced into the English language in the 19th century and has since been used to denote both kilogrammes and kilometres. Although The Economist, for example, accepts kilogramme as a substitute, according to the Canadian government's Premium Plus system, "SI (International System of Units) usage, followed in scientific and technical writing," it is prohibited, and it is referred to as "a common informal name" in Russ Rowlett's Dictionary of Units of Measurement. When the metric system was given legal standing by the US Congress in 1866, the word "kilo" could be used instead of "kilogramme," but that status was repealed in 1990. The SI system was implemented in 1960, and in 1970, the BIPM began issuing the SI Brochure, which includes all pertinent judgments and recommendations made by the CGPM regarding units. According to the SI Brochure, the use of acronyms for unit names or symbols is prohibited. Important Points Each unit of sand weighs 0.3865 kg.
