There are six types of fractions.

The term used to describe the parts of a full object is fractions. For instance, if the cake is divided into four parts, each part is equal to one-fourth of the cake. Here, the numerator is 1, the denominator is 4 and the fraction is 1/4. See the below figure to understand this concept of fractions.

Types of fractions

The three basic fraction types that can be distinguished based on the numerator and the denominator are:

  • Proper fractions.

  • Improper fractions.

  • Mixed fractions.

A fraction group's classification helps in fraction comparison. They belong into the following categories:

  • Like fractions

  • Unlike fractions

  • Equivalent fractions

Proper Fractions

A proper fraction is one whose numerator is less than its denominator.

Example- \frac{4}{5}, \frac{7}{8}, \frac{2}{5}.

Improper Fractions

A fraction whose numerator is more than or equal to its denominator is referred to as an improper fraction.

Example- \frac{5}{4}, \frac{8}{7}, \frac{5}{2}

Mixed Fractions

An improper fraction can be expressed as a mixed fraction by dividing the numerator by the denominator and yielding the quotient and remainder. As its name implies, it combines a whole and a "part."

Examples- 1\frac{5}{4}, 3\frac{8}{7}, 6\frac{5}{2}. 1679561273425

Like Fractions

Like fractions are those two or more fractions that include the same denominator but a different numerator.

Example- \frac{5}{4}, \frac{8}{4} 1679561273018

Unlike Fractions

When two or more fractions contain different denominators, the fractions are referred to as, unlike fractions.

Example- \frac{5}{7}, \frac{8}{9} 1679561273203

Equivalent Fractions

Fractions that retain the same value when simplified are said to be equivalent.

Example- \frac{25}{20} 1679561273881can be simplified as \frac{5}{4} 1679561274556. These two fractions are equivalent.

Unit Fractions

Unit fractions or unique fractions are fractions with the number 1 as the numerator.

Example- \frac{1}{20}, \frac{1}{15}, \frac{1}{6} 1679561273656
