The Indian rupee is a currency with a denomination of 500 rupees (500). The 500 and 1,000 notes were first issued in 1987 and 2000, respectively, while the 1 and 2 rupees notes were phased out in 1995. As a step to combat corruption in India and the problem of fake currency, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the demonetization (discontinuation and replacement) of the 500 and 1,000 rupee banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi series, in an effort to combat corruption and the use of illegal or undeclared wealth on November 8, 2016. On November 10th, 2016, a new 500 was introduced in place of the previous one.
The Ashoka Pillar Emblem and a photograph of Mahatma Gandhi are featured on the obverse side of the 500 rupee note from the Mahatma Gandhi New Series, which measures 66 mm by 150 mm and is coloured Stone Grey. The note's governor has also signed it. To help those who are blind recognise the currency, it contains a Braille component. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan emblem and tagline are also included on the back side, along with a motif of the Red Fort, an important historical monument in India.

The obverse side of the 500 rupee banknote from the Mahatma Gandhi Series is orange-yellow and features a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi along with the governor of the Reserve Bank of India's signature. To help those who are blind recognise the currency, it contains a Braille component. The Gyarah Murti is depicted on the backside. The new symbol has been added to the 500-yen bill as of 2011. All banknotes manufactured before 2005 will be removed from circulation by March 31, 2014, the RBI said in January 2014. Later, the deadline was raised until January 1, 2015. The deadline was again extended to June 30, 2016.
The number of 500 notes to make 50000 is 100. And, the top left and bottom right sides of the new Rs. 500 notes each have a number panel with the aforementioned numbers rising from small to big. On the bottom right of the note, the denomination is noted along with the rupee symbol, changing the colour from green to blue.
