To be eligible for the JEE Main exam itself, there is no minimum marks requirement in Class 12. However, securing admission to prestigious institutions like IITs, NITs, and other top colleges often mandates a minimum of 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at the Class 12 level. Importantly, irrespective of your JEE Main rank or percentile, meeting the minimum marks requirement in Class 12 is mandatory for admission. The JEE Main eligibility criteria for SC and ST candidates remain the same.

However, given the intense competition with thousands of high-achieving candidates (many with 98-99% marks), securing a higher percentage significantly improves admission chances. Students can read the complete article to know about the CBSE Class 12 percentage for IIT admission through JEE.
In addition to cracking JEE Advanced, candidates need to meet the IIT eligibility criteria. Check the separate eligibility criteria for B.Tech and B.Arch courses in IITs, NITs, and other premium institutions below:
Subjects | Percentage required |
BTech in NITs/ IIITs/ GFTIs | 75% (general) or 65% (SC/ST) |
B.Arch/ B. Plan | 50% aggregate scores |
CBSE's 12th percentage for IIT admission through JEE depends on two conditions. Check the conditions below:
To be eligible for JEE Advanced, candidates must first qualify for the JEE Main examination by surpassing the established cutoff score. Also, a minimum aggregate of 75% in CBSE Class 12 board examinations (or equivalent) is required for general category candidates, while SC, ST, and PwD candidates need a minimum of 65%.
However, a minimum 12th percentage for appearing in the JEE Main exam is not mandatory. While admission to IITs and NITs mandates a 75% minimum in Class 12, candidates with higher percentages (especially above 90%) have a stronger competitive advantage due to the intense competition for limited seats.
Candidates must have successfully passed CBSE Class XII (or equivalent) with at least five subjects. They must be within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in their respective board examination category. This percentile is calculated based on their performance in all mandatory subjects within a single academic year.
Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, the language with the highest marks (if multiple languages were taken), and the subject with the highest marks among those not included in the previous four are the subjects considered for calculating the aggregate marks and determining the top 20 percentile.
To be eligible for JEE Main, general category candidates must have secured a minimum of 75% in their Class 12 board exams, while SC/ST candidates require a minimum of 65%. Candidates are permitted a maximum of six attempts for JEE Main within three years. It's important to note that the specific 12th percentage requirement for JEE Main can vary depending on the college or institution.
