The Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced sweeping changes for the CBSE 12th board exam 2026. The board has made a decisive move towards adopting a fully digital evaluation system. Beginning with the 2026 exam cycle, Class 12 answer scripts will be assessed through On-Screen Marking (OSM), and post-result verification of marks will be discontinued.

The announcement was made during a live webcast led by Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, who detailed the Board’s roadmap for implementing technology-driven reforms across all CBSE-affiliated schools.

CBSE Class 12 Evaluation to Shift to On-Screen Marking (OSM)

    • Under the new system, Class 12 answer sheets will be scanned and evaluated digitally. The OSM model is designed to eliminate totalling errors, minimise human intervention, and accelerate the declaration of CBSE 12th results.

    • Teachers will be able to assess copies remotely from designated school facilities, reducing logistical delays and transportation costs.

    • The Board clarified that the CBSE Class 10 evaluation process will continue in physical mode for 2026.

What is the CBSE On Screen Marking System?

The CBSE On-Screen Marking System (OSM) is a technology-driven evaluation framework to digitise the assessment of Class 12 board examination answer scripts. It replaces the traditional manual checking process with a secure, centralised, and fully monitored digital evaluation mechanism.

How the OSM System or Digital Evaluation Works

    • After the board examination concludes, physical answer booklets are collected at designated centres and scanned using high-resolution imaging systems. Each page is digitised to ensure clarity and readability, including diagrams, graphs, and rough work.
    • The scanned scripts are encrypted and uploaded to a protected evaluation server. Each answer script is assigned a unique digital identity to maintain confidentiality and prevent examiner bias. Personal details of candidates remain masked during evaluation.
    • The system automatically distributes answer scripts to empanelled evaluators based on subject expertise and workload distribution. This randomisation ensures fairness and eliminates the possibility of selective checking.
    • Examiners access scripts through a dedicated portal. The interface allows section-wise marking, real-time display of marking schemes, annotation tools for remarks, and automated totalling of marks.
    • Authorities can track evaluation progress in real time, monitor examiner productivity, and ensure deadlines are met. Advanced analytics help identify trends and maintain uniform marking standards across regions.

No Post-Result Verification of Marks for Class 12

Until now, students dissatisfied with their CBSE Class 12th results could apply for verification of marks to check totalling errors or discrepancies. However, with the implementation of On-Screen Marking, the Board has expressed confidence that digital evaluation will drastically reduce calculation mistakes and manual errors.

    • In a landmark decision, CBSE has confirmed that students will no longer be able to apply for post-result verification of marks for Class 12.

    • The Board stated that the enhanced accuracy of digital evaluation makes manual re-verification unnecessary, thereby streamlining the result process and reducing administrative workload.

    • Students are therefore advised to carefully review their performance expectations, as the 2026 Class 12 board results will be considered final under the new digital evaluation framework.
