When one thinks of Jharkhand, the image that comes to mind is that of a region covered with forests, inhabited by adivasis and an overall underdeveloped infrastructure and limited or no urban comfort. But what is notable about this state that was founded just 23 years ago is that it has successfully upgraded its school infrastructure. A similar statistic is seen in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands
There are around 2,95,471 schools across four states and one Union Territory in the eastern regions of our country. This comes to around 20 per cent of the total schools of India. In this article, we will look at four states – Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is a Union Territory.
Careers360 studied Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) data for the year of 2021-22.
In continuation of the series on UDISE+ report schools across India, Careers360 recently published an analysis of schools in north, south and north-east of India. Lets dive in to know more about the schools in the east zone of India.
Toilet Facilities: More than 99 per cent schools of east India have toilets facilities, out of them around 99.1 per cent schools toilets are in proper working condition.
Library: Around 83 per cent of schools in the eastern part of the country have either a library, a book bank or a reading corner.
Drinking water: Out of the total of 2,95,471 schools in the eastern part, more than 99 per cent have drinking water facilities. And more than 99 per cent of that school's drinking water facility is in functional condition.
Computer Labs: About 30 percent of the east Indian schools have computer labs, out of which more than 97 per cent are in working condition.

Almost all the schools in this region were successful in providing toilet facilities to its students. Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a territory is small in terms of geographical area but it remains best among eastern regions.

West Bengal and Bihar have around 94,000 schools each. But the percentage of schools with libraries in each state varies by almost 25 percentage points.

Eastern states have more than 99 per cent schools with drinking water facilities and almost all of them are in a good and working condition.
A notable fact is that all schools in the east and the west zone have been providing drinking water facilities to their students.

After Meghalaya, West Bengal schools had the lowest percentage of schools with any computer labs in them.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Jharkhand had the highest percentage of schools with computer labs.

The states mentioned in the east zone may commonly come across as those that fall behind in urban development. However, these have proven to be frontrunners when it comes to giving functional basic facilities to students. Facilities that are essential and important for children to focus and flourish in their academics.
