Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) scheme was started by the Government of India to set up residential schools for girls aged 10-14 at Upper Primary Level specially belonging to SC, ST, OBC and other minority or below poverty line communities. The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya scheme is further extended under Samgra Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) wherein the age group 10-18 is covered who aspire to study until Class 12.
KGBV aims at the establishment of a minimum of one residential school in every educationally backward block (EBBs) for girls from classes VI-XII. The Government of India has sanctioned more than 2500 KGBVs, out of which 94% are functional, as per reports. These Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya have an enrollment of around 2 lakh girl children from SC, ST, OBC, BPL and other minority groups in their schools. Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya reserves 75% of seats for SC, ST, OBC and other minority communities while 25% of seats are given to girls belonging to below poverty line families.
The students can fill the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya online application form if released state-wise or could contact an individual state for the same. After filling the application form a merit list is released on the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya official website of the respective state.
Facilities at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya
Residential Schooling – KGBV provides a hostel facility for a minimum of 50 girl children along with every school operational.
Medical Facility – Regular health check-up camps are organised in the school premises
Provision for a stipend – Every girl child enrolled in KGBV gets a monthly stipend allocated by the government for that school. In fact, the teachers who get more than 50 enrollments also get annual cash rewards.
Free textbooks and uniforms are also provided to students
Vocational training and guidance – Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya not only focuses on the academic development of the child but also ensures training in vocational courses which help in finding better job opportunities

KGBV full form is Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya and admission to these schools is conducted individually by each state in India either through online mode or offline mode. Students can contact individual school authorities for the same. A merit list of the selected students is released by the school authorities on the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya official website.
