NCERT Syllabus for Class 12 English 2022
NCERT Syllabus for Class 12 English 2023- NCERT releases the Class 12th English syllabus that is followed by different CBSE and State Board schools. CBSE strictly follows the NCERT Syllabus for Class 12 English to add value in their curriculum. In class 12th, students can choose different streams like medical, non - medical, arts and commerce. However, the English subject is compulsory for all the students appearing for the class 12 board exam regardless of the stream they choose.

NCERT Syllabus for Class 12 English 2023
The question paper for class 12 English exam is differentiated into 3 sections as follows-

Section A - Reading Section
Section A of CBSE class 12th English paper carries a weightage of 30 marks.
This section includes three passages. These are of the following types -
A. Two unseen passages with a variation of Very Short Answer/Short Answer or Multiple Choice type questions to test comprehension, interpretation and inference. Vocabulary such as word formation and inference of meaning is also tested.
The total length of the two passages should be between 1100 - 1200 words.
Six Multiple Choice type question and sixteen Very Short Answer Type Questions (total 22 Marks) is asked from these passages.
The passages include two of the following:
Factual passages, e.g., instructions, descriptions, reports.
Descriptive passages including opinion, e.g., argumentative, persuasive or interpretative text.
Literary passages, such as an extract from fiction, drama, poetry, essay or biography.
A poem can be of 28-35 lines.
The passages might be literary, or factual to test comprehensions. The length of one passage is between 600-700 words.
B. The third passage is of 400-500 words. Note-making and Abstraction are assessed.
i. One Short Answer Type Question is of 3 marks
ii. One Long Answer Type Question is to be answered in 80-100 words carries 5 marks

Section B - Writing Section
NCERT Syllabus for Class 12 English 2023 section-B is the writing section which carries a weightage of 30 marks. In this section, the different writing styles of the candidates are tested.
a. The choice will be given to attempt one question out of the given two Short Answer Questions based on any of the following
- Advertisement writing
- Notice writing
- Poster writing
- Formal and informal invitation and reply writing. – 4 Marks
b. The choice will be given to attempt one question out of the two Long Answer Questions that must be answered in 120-150 words. The questions will be based on any of the following -
Letter writing - based on verbal/visual input - 6 Marks
Letter types include Business or official letters (for making enquiries, registering complaints, asking for and giving information, placing orders and sending replies)
Letters to the editor (giving suggestions or opinion on an issue of public interest)
Application for a job
c. Two Very Long Answer Questions involves internal choice, to be attempted in 150-200 words. The questions are based on any of the following -
Article writing
Debate writing
speech writing
Report writing - (10x2=20 Marks)
Section C- Literature Section
The Literature section holds a weightage of 40 marks. The questions in this section are from the Literature text books and long reading texts.

The type of questions asked from these prescribed Class 12 English books are as follows -
Very Short Answer Questions - This is based on an extract from poetry to test comprehension and appreciation. (4 Marks)
Students can attempt any four out of the given six Short Answer Questions based on prose/ drama/poetry from both texts. (12 Marks)
They can attempt any one out of the given two Long Answer Questions which are to be answered in 120-150 words to test global comprehension a beyond the texts. (6 Marks)
Candidates can attempt any one out of the given two Long Answer Questions to be answered in 120-150 words to test global comprehension along with analysis. (6 Marks)
Any one out of the given two Long Answer Questions is to be answered in 120-150 words based on theme, plot and incidents from the prescribed novels. (6 Marks)
Candidates can attempt any one out of the given two Long Answer Questions in 120-150 words - based on understanding appreciation, analysis and interpretation of character sketch. (6 Marks)

Reading Section:
This section involves comprehensions. Students are provided question papers 5 mins earlier for the reading.
They are advised to read this section in that time after going through the entire paper at a glance.
This will help them to understand the central idea of the comprehension which will let them answer the same in less time.
A lot of reading should be included in the routine for the broadening of imagination, perspective and thoughts.
Students should not spend more than 45 minutes in attempting this section.
Writing Section:
This section involves the writing of - letters, emails, notices, report writing, paragraphs etc.
Students should go through the format of each of these and practise for the same at least twice before appearing for the exam.
Do not rush while attempting this section. Stay calm and show the creativity while attempting this section.
Keep it simple yet appealing.
Literature:
This is the section where you can score well as it’s based on your understanding of the chapters.
Do not exaggerate your answers as if you’ll write unnecessary details it’ll kill your time.
Give the answers briefly as per the word count.
Novels:
Read the novel well and go through the previous year CBSE Class 12th question papers to get an idea about the pattern of the exam.
