NCERT Class 11 Chemistry Notes Chapter 1 Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry will help you learn the properties of matter and the principles and laws related to it. The important topics covered are,
Nature of matter |
Properties of matter and their measurement |
Uncertainty in measurement |
Laws of Chemical Combinations |
Dalton Atomic Theory |
Mole Concept and Molar Mass |
Percentage composition |
Stoichiometry and stoichiometric calculation |
Laws of Chemical Combinations - Different elements combine to form compounds. The Laws of Chemical Combination have two basic laws. According to the Law of Conservation of Mass, the total mass of the components before and after a chemical reaction remains constant, which means nothing is lost or gained. Another is the Law of Constant Proportions, which states that the same elements are always present in a compound in the same fixed mass ratio. Water, for example, always contains a mass ratio of 1:8 for hydrogen to oxygen. These laws provide us a definite, predictable understanding of how elements react and mix.

Classification of elements and periodicity in properties is very important for Class 11 since it explains basics like chemical bonding and periodicity. The NCERT notes Class 11 Chemistry chapter 3 focuses on representing the concepts in the easiest way possible. The important topics covered are -
Why Do We Need to Classify Elements? |
Mendeleev periodic table |
Genesis of Periodic Classification |
Modern Periodic Law and The Present Form of The Periodic Table |
Nomenclature of Elements with Atomic Numbers > 100 |
Electronic Configurations of Elements and The Periodic Table |
Periodic Trends in Properties of Elements |
Mendeleev’s periodic table
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev proposed the periodic table in 1869. He observed that the physical and chemical properties of elements were connected to their atomic masses periodically. Mendeleev's Law states that the chemical characteristics of elements are a periodic function of their atomic weights.
Limitations-
The chapter Chemical bonding and molecular structure talks about the structure, the bond formation, and the properties of the molecules. The concepts discussed in the NCERT notes chapter 4 hold high importance as it form the basis for inorganic chemistry. The important topics covered are-
VSEPR theory |
Lewis structures |
Valence bond theory |
The polar character of covalent bonds |
The concept of hybridization |
The molecular orbital theory of homonuclear diatomic molecules |
Hydrogen bonding |
The NCERT notes chapter 5 features the relationship between heat and other forms of energy. This is one of the most important chapters in Physical chemistry. The important topics covered are-
Thermodynamic terms |
Enthalpy change |
Entropy |
Calorimetry |
Types of reaction |
Spontaneity |
States of a system-
The quantities like temperature, pressure, the volume combine to form the composition of the system. But in order to deal with these quantities, we must have average conclusions of such measurements so we introduce a term called state functions or state variables. These quantities like pressure(p), volume(V), temperature(T), and amount(n) are referred as state variables or state functions.
Internal energy: It is defined as the combined energy or sum of energies such as mechanical, electrical or chemical etc. of the system. This is generally denoted by the letter ‘U’.
The NCERT notes of chapter 6 give a clear idea of the concepts mentioned in the chapter. Chemical equilibrium is the state in which neither the reactants nor the products can alter any further. When a system attains equilibrium, the forward and backward reaction rates remain constant. The important topics covered are-
Solid-liquid Equilibrium |
Liquid-vapour Equilibrium |
Solid – Vapour Equilibrium |
Equilibrium In Chemical Processes – Dynamic Equilibrium |
Law Of Chemical Equilibrium And Equilibrium Constant |
Homogeneous Equilibria |
Heterogeneous Equilibria |

Redox Reactions And Electrode Processes |
A redox reaction is a chemical reaction in which we can see the transfer of electrons occur in between two reactants, i.e, one is going to be reduced and the other is going to gain that electron.
Oxidation number can be defined as the bond formation of ionic bonds with other heteroatoms and at the same time, attaining the charge on that atom. For example,
The oxidation state of oxygen is -2 in most of the compounds. Although it acquires other oxidation number as well, depending on the elements it is connected with.
All alkali metal ions are always having a +1 oxidation state
