CBSE Class 10th Exam Date:01 Jan' 26 - 14 Feb' 26
The Department of School Education and Literacy has created the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) as an organised framework maintained by the National Information Centre. UDISE collects and maintains information on schools across India. Anyone can find the data on the number of students, educators, and administrators for all the schools. It is one of the most credible platforms to get data related to the schools in India on the district, state, and national levels. Based on the latest UDISE reports, a total of 14.76 lakh schools are registered on the portal, out of which 1011095 are government schools, 346452 are private schools, 79965 government-aided schools, and 38602 others.

The UDISE or Unified District Information System for Education was launched in 2012-13 with two different systems:
1. District Information System (DISE) for primary education.
2. Secondary Education Management Information System (SEMIS) for secondary education.
The DISE was initially created to monitor primary education in a few states, from Class 1 to Class 5, and SEMIS was initiated to monitor secondary education, from Class 9 to Class 12. Late in 2018-19, an advanced version, UDISE+, was launched, which enables the collection of data online and enhances the quality of data from all the states and union territories.
The primary objective of UDISE includes the following:
Comprehensive Data Collection: The main objective of UDISE is to collect accurate and recent data of every school across India. This data includes the enrollment of students, teacher details, infrastructure, and performance.
Monitor Educational Quality: With the data collected, the Ministry of Education can identify the challenges and gaps in the education system and work on the loopholes.
Planning and Process: UDISE helps the government to make decisions related to the allocation of resources, the development of infrastructure, and the formulation of policies for the schools. They keep a track of the progress of the plans implemented for each school as well.
Maintaining Transparency: To ensure reliability, the data collected goes through various verification processes before reporting.
The UDISE+ separates the data into a few modules to structure the data for better accessibility. The UDISE plus student module 2025-26 includes the following:
All Modules: Allows the user to choose and access any module based on their role. They can choose their state and log in to any module where they need information.
School Profile Module: This module is specifically for schools to update their school data, like enrollment, facilities, infrastructure, and school development.
Teacher Module: This module works for the teachers, where they can update personal and service records.
Student Module: This is for updating the student-level data.
Report Module: This module includes various education reports.
School Directory and User Management Module: This module works for managing school details and user accounts.
The UDISE+ dashboard is accessible to all the registered schools, students and teachers. Based on the recent data of the year 2023-24, the data for the schools has been mentioned in the table given below.
Number of schools | 1476114 |
Number of teachers | 9807600 |
Number of students | 248045828 |
Let’s go through the key features of UDISE:
UDISE includes data collected from all the schools across India under one platform, making it accessible to all and providing transparency.
For tracking process and maintenance, all the schools are provided with a unique 11-digit UDISE code.
The data collected goes through various levels of verification, making it highly reliable and the only platform to provide details of all the schools in India.
The registered schools provide the data annually through the online portal via the Online Data Capture Format (DCF)
The UDISE has a unique feature, which is Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping, which helps in visualising the location and infrastructure of the school.
To keep a track of the students, the Permanent Enrollment Number (PEN) has been introduced by the authorities.
This data helps in implementing government schedules to improve the quality of education in India.
UDISE also offers a school geo portal, which is accessible to all. In this portal, the students can search for their desired schools on the map. Once you click on the states, you can see the schools along with the school codes mentioned on the map. The map shows the total number of schools registered from each state, along with the population of the state and the state code.
The UDISE code is an 11-digit unique code assigned to the schools that are recognised by the government. It is a permanent identification code for the schools. It is assigned to operational schools and schools that have been granted permission to open. If the school is closed permanently or temporarily after the allocation of the UDISE code, the code remains associated with that school and will be in the archive. The UDISE code generation is automated and can be modified only by the Ministry of Education in case the district or state of the school changes.
After a new school is established and recognised by the state, the schools need to follow the steps mentioned below to get its UDISE code.
