The Physics lab manual covers experiments that reinforce theoretical concepts and help students understand practical applications of formulas and principles. Some highlights include:
Measuring the focal length of lenses and mirrors in optics.
Verifying Ohm’s law and the laws of resistance in series and parallel combinations.
Determining the acceleration due to gravity using simple pendulum experiments.
Measuring current and voltage in various circuits.
Studying the motion of a body on an inclined plane and other mechanics-based experiments.
Performing activities related to electromagnetic induction and alternating currents.
Exploring wave phenomena and optical instruments.
To determine resistance per unit length of a given wire by plotting a graph of potential difference versus current.
A wire of unknown resistance (~10Ω), battery eliminator or an accumulator (0 to 3V) or two dry cells (1.5 V each), voltmeter (0-5 V), milliammeter (0– 500 mA), rheostat, plug key, connecting wires and a piece of sand paper.
Ohm's law states that the electric current flowing through a conductor is directly proportional to the potential difference across its ends, provided the physical state of the conductor remains unchanged.
Clean the ends of the connecting wires with the help of sandpaper in order to remove any insulating coating on them.
Connect various components - resistance, rheostat, battery, key, voltmeter and ammeter.
Note whether the pointers in the milliammeter and voltmeter coincide with the zero mark on the measuring scale. If it is not so, adjust the pointer to coincide with the zero mark by adjusting the screw provided near the base of the needle using a screwdriver.
Note the range and least count of the given voltmeter and milliammeter.
Insert the key K and slide the rheostat contact to one of its extreme ends, so that current passing through the resistance wire is minimum.
Note the milliammeter and voltmeter readings.
Remove the key K and allow the wire to cool, if heated. Again, insert the key. Shift the rheostat contact slightly to increase the applied voltage. Note the milliammeter and voltmeter readings.
Repeat step 7 for four different settings of the rheostat. Record your observations in a tabular form.

Physics practicals carry significant weightage in the final board exams (30 marks). Scoring well requires consistent practice and proper understanding of each experiment’s aim and procedure. Students can go through the following useful preparation tips:
Read each experiment’s aim, theory, and formula derivations carefully before performing it.
Maintain a neat and complete practical record book with diagrams, observation tables, and calculations.
Practise using the proper apparatus to minimise errors.
Work on common Viva questions to gain confidence for the oral exam.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Students can download the unit-wise Physics lab manual PDFs for free from the links provided in the table above. Alternatively, they can visit ncert.nic.in to download the same.
Always handle instruments carefully, avoid carelessness while taking readings, double-check circuit connections before switching on the power supply, and follow the teacher’s safety instructions strictly.
The practical exam carries 30 marks, which includes performance of experiments, viva questions, and lab record book evaluation.

Failing in pre-board or selection tests does NOT automatically stop you from sitting in the CBSE Class 12 board exams. Pre-boards are conducted by schools only to check preparation and push students to improve; CBSE itself does not consider pre-board marks. What actually matters is whether your school issues your
