To draw the graph of a quadratic polynomial and observe the following -
When the coefficient of x² is positive, find the shape of the curve.
When the coefficient of x² is negative, find the shape of the curve.
Its number of zeroes.
Graph paper
Cardboard
Ruler
Pencil
Eraser
Pen
Adhesive
Step 1: Take a cardboard of a convenient size and paste a graph paper on it.
Step 2: Consider a quadratic polynomial f(x) = ax²+bx+c.
Step 3: Two cases arise: (i) a>0 and (ii) a<0.
Step 4: Find the ordered pairs (x, f(x)) for different values of x.
Step 5: Plot these ordered pairs in the Cartesian plane.
Step 6: Join the plotted points with a freehand curve.
Note: Points on the graph paper should be joined by a freehand curve only.
The curve shape obtained in each case is a parabola.
A parabola opens upward when the coefficient of x² is positive.
It opens downward when the coefficient of x² is negative.
The maximum number of zeroes which a quadratic polynomial can have is 2.
The above activity helps in -
Understanding the geometrical representation of a quadratic polynomial.
Finding the number of zeroes of a quadratic polynomial.
