The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) conducts the Senior Secondary examination (Class 12th) twice a year, in April and October. Like other educational boards, NIOS has also established NIOS Class 12 pass criteria and subject offerings. The NIOS Board is a recognised alternative to regular schooling; however, students must meet the same passing mark requirements as those in regular schools to qualify. Students must meet minimum pass mark criteria, which is 33% marks in each subject, to qualify for the NIOS Class 12 exam. Minimum Passing Marks in NIOS Class 12
The minimum passing marks for NIOS Class 12 exams or NIOS Senior Secondary Course are the following:
- A minimum of 33% marks in each subject is required.
- This 33% must be achieved separately in both theoretical and practical exams (if applicable), as well as in aggregate.
- Certification requires passing in 5 subjects, including at least one but not more than two languages.
NIOS Class 12 Passing Marks (Subject-Wise)
Failing to secure the required marks in any subject will result in a ‘Not Passed’ status for that subject. However, NIOS provides multiple chances to reappear in exams and improve performance.
Students must focus on both theory and practical components (if applicable) to meet the criteria and successfully obtain their NIOS Class 12 pass certificate and marksheet. Students can refer to the following table, which lists the NIOS 12th passing marks for each subject.

Note: Theory and practical marks vary by subject. For example, the Physics subject has 70 marks for theory and 30 marks for practical. Students must get 33% in both separately.

What Happens if I Did not Score Passing Marks in NIOS 12th Class?
If a student does not score 33% in any subject:
- They are marked ‘Not Passed” in that subject.
- They can reappear in the failed subject(s) in the next NIOS exam cycle.
- There is no limit to the number of attempts within the validity period of 5 years from the time of NIOS registration.
Can I Change Subjects in NIOS If I Fail?
Students who wish to change their subjects if they are unable to manage, then NIOS allows students to:
- Change subjects (maximum of 2) if they feel they cannot cope.
- Add new subjects to improve overall performance.
- Appear in the NIOS On-Demand Examination System (ODES) to improve marks quickly.
