NIOS improvement exams allow retake of specific Class 12 subjects to improve their scores, but the new marks are reflected only on a separate NIOS marksheet. The original CBSE marksheet remains unchanged. When applying to colleges or jobs, students can submit their original CBSE marksheet for official certification, alongside the NIOS marksheet for the improved subjects. This dual submission is valid; recognised institutions, including Delhi University, accept both documents as long as the combined performance meets their eligibility criteria. However, some organisations, such as IIT-JEE, do not accept it, so before applying, candidates should check with the institute first.

The primary marksheet used is CBSE, but both are valid marksheet. CBSE is the main, full‑time education board that most universities, employers, and competitive‑exam bodies recognise as the standard route. When students use NIOS for improvements, they are working with an alternative, open school that provides a new, additional marksheet, not a replacement for the CBSE certificate.
NIOS is fully valid and recognised, but it is considered a supplementary board. Students’ CBSE result continues to be the official, initial proof of their education, while the NIOS marksheet shows improved performance in specific subjects
No, students cannot transfer their CBSE marks directly to NIOS. CBSE and NIOS are separate boards, each issuing its certificates and marksheets. NIOS allows students to retake or improve subjects they have passed elsewhere (such as CBSE), but the improvements will appear on a new, separate NIOS marksheet. Students' CBSE score remains unchanged.
Many students pair a CBSE certificate with improved NIOS marks to meet cut-offs for university admissions, entrance exams, or job eligibility. Here's how it typically works:
Add the NIOS marksheet to reflect higher scores in specific subjects.
Most boards, universities, and entrance evaluations recognise this combination as long as the total percentage meets the requirement
NIOS and CBSE marksheets are both fully valid for NEET UG and JEE eligibility, including admission to IITs. However, students must use a single board's marksheet (not mix CBSE and NIOS records). The admissions are based on their entrance exam rank (JEE or NEET), not directly on the board represented in their marksheet.
The said information is shared for JEE advanced on Information Bulletin, "In all cases, the marksheet is required to have been issued by the same examination board, and marksheets from separate boards are not permitted.".
