The National Standard Examination in Physics is the first stage of the Indian Physics Olympiad programme, conducted by IAPT. It works like the entry point for Class 11 and 12 students who want to represent India at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO). The exam checks concepts that go beyond CBSE/ISC textbooks, and has 60 multiple-choice questions to solve within 2 hours. The overall difficulty feels closer to JEE Advanced, but with more emphasis on conceptual clarity, logical reasoning and applying physics in non-routine situations.

    NSEP Question Papers

The NSEP syllabus includes the units Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism, Optics, Thermodynamics, and Modern Physics. A lot of the questions end up being multi-step, so you can’t just memorise formulas and move on; sometimes you have to think it through, in a smart way. NSEP previous Year Question Papers are the most valuable resource for NSEP, because they show you IAPT’s kind of question style. When you analyse NSEP papers from 2015 to 2025, you keep seeing some recurring patterns, like dimensional analysis, error analysis, those tricky graph-based questions, and conceptual MCQs that test the fundamentals, not just the formulae. If you solve the PYQs consistently, you start building the problem-solving intuition you need for crossing the MI/MAS cut-off and then qualifying for INPhO.

In this article, you will get NSEP Previous Year Question Papers with answer keys and detailed solutions. We have also added topic-wise distribution and weightage analysis of the last 10 years, so you can focus on high-priority areas for NSEP 2026.

    Preparation Tips for NSEP Exam

    • Understand the exam pattern first: NSEP has 60 multiple-choice questions to be solved in 2 hours, yeah. Each correct response gives you 3 marks, but 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer, so keep that in mind. The cut-off for qualifying for INPhO is usually around 120 to 150 marks out of 240.
    • Choose the Right Book: Stick to the right books, not random books. Start with NCERT and H.C. Verma Volume 1 and 2. Honestly, these two books cover almost 80% of what you need, like a big chunk. For the harder level of questions, go for Pathfinder for Olympiad Physics and then select problems from I.E., Irodov.
    • Solve previous year papers: Papers from 2015 to 2025 are basically essential. IAPT also repeats concepts but with small variations, so don’t treat it like “new material” every time. Topics like dimensional analysis, graph-based questions, and error analysis show up almost every year, so those should not be ignored.
    • Focus on high-weightage topics: Mechanics, Electrodynamics, and Modern Physics together make up more than 50% of the paper. And please don’t skip Heat & Thermodynamics, Optics, and Units & Dimensions, even if you feel they’re “standard”.
    • Avoid common mistakes: Read every question carefully, especially words like “NOT” or “INCORRECT”, as they can flip the whole meaning. Also, always check units in your answer, even if the math seems correct. And don’t overcomplicate problems that can be solved using basic concepts; it’s usually there for a reason.
    • Don’t ignore error analysis: Usually, 3 to 4 questions every year are based on error propagation, significant figures, and graph interpretation. These can become scoring if you prepare them well rather than rushing.
    • Finally, follow a last month plan: Solve one previous year paper daily. Take three full-length mock tests every week. Revise weak chapters twice a day, and keep revising until it feels automatic.
