11. Explain the role of each of the following activities in defense mechanism.

(a) Lysosomes combine with membrane sac during the process of phagocytosis.

  • Phagocytosis is a process where immune cells (such as macrophages and neutrophils) engulf and digest pathogens like bacteria and viruses.

  • Lysosomes contain hydrolytic enzymes that break down these pathogens when they fuse with the membrane sac (phagosome).

  • This prevents infection by destroying harmful microbes and removing cellular debris.

(b) Chemicals produced by white blood cells increase body temperature.

  • White blood cells release pyrogens in response to infections.

  • Pyrogens reset the body's thermostat in the hypothalamus, leading to an increase in body temperature (fever).

  • Fever helps in defense by:

    • Slowing down the growth and reproduction of pathogens.

    • Activating immune responses by increasing the efficiency of white blood cells.

12. Analyse each of the given situations and explain how variations are formed in the offspring.

(a) During the initial phase of meiosis, chromosomes pair.

  • In prophase I of meiosis, homologous chromosomes pair up and undergo crossing over.

  • During crossing over, exchange of genetic material occurs between chromatids of homologous chromosomes.

  • This leads to genetic recombination, creating unique genetic variations in offspring.

(b) Parents' chromosomes reach their offspring through gametes.

  • Gametes (sperm and egg) are formed through meiosis, where each gamete receives a unique combination of chromosomes.

  • During fertilization, the fusion of gametes results in a new combination of genes, leading to genetic diversity.

  • This inheritance of different genetic traits from both parents contributes to variations in offspring.
