To keep the curiosity of young minds intact is the duty of every school. Science fairs conducted in the schools are proof of the fulfilment of this responsibility. Science fairs or science exhibitions are special events where students show off their science projects or innovations to others. They explain what they have done, how they have done it, and what they learned. It's a chance to share their cool ideas and discoveries with everyone.
When I was in school my friend and I made a model of ‘Morse Code’ for our science exhibition. Morse code is a method of telecommunication used to transmit coded information. Each English alphabet letter can be represented using dots and dashes through Morse code.
During the process I not only learned about the scientific concepts of communication but also how the method was used to send encrypted messages. Morse code was extensively used as a telecommunication system for military operations, maritime communication and emergency services.
Participation in the science exhibition fosters scientific inquiry, research skills, collaboration and innovation in me. Every school should encourage students to participate in science fairs to develop similar qualities and more:
Science fairs allow students to explore their scientific interests. When students choose a topic for their science fair, let’s say a model volcano, students not only learn about volcanoes but also about the chemical processes behind the volcanic eruption. They use baking soda and diluted vinegar to mimic the release of gases that happen in the original volcano.
Students through such hands-on projects learn that science lies beyond textbooks. They observe that acids (vinegar) and bases (baking soda) react when mixed together. The carbon dioxide released during this reaction creates a fizz, similar to the explosive eruption which when magma mixed with carbon reaches the mouth of the original volcano.
Students do a lot of research for their chosen topic that they will present at the science fair. They learn to gather information from various sources and evaluate the credibility of data. This process nurtures research skills, enabling students to differentiate between credible sources and misleading information—an essential skill in today's information-driven world.
Students also develop effective presentation and communication skills while explaining their projects to their peers, teachers, and judges. This further boosts their confidence to convey ideas in simple yet effective ways.

Sometimes, the participation in science fairs is also a group project. This collaboration is just like the real world where people of different mindsets are assigned to solve a problem together. Students learn to work as a team, divide tasks, share responsibilities, and identify each other's strengths and weaknesses. Students also learn to respect differing opinions, compromise and manage conflict in the team, if any.
Science fairs involve experiments, and experiments are not always successful. Students encounter challenges, setbacks, and unexpected results.
Imagine "Team A" working on a science project. They're creating a "quiz board," which is like a fun game with questions and answers. Behind the board, they connect wires from questions to the right answers. When someone picks the right answer, a light bulb lights up. But, oops! One person connected the wrong wires. Later the team talked about it, figured out the mistake, and fixed it together.
Tackling such situations develops life skills in the students. It prepares students to handle challenges beyond the confines of the science fair with a positive attitude.
Science fairs bridge the gap between theoretical concepts learned in the classroom and their practical applications. Students gain a deeper understanding of scientific principles by applying them to real-world scenarios.
Engaging in scientific research for a science fair project requires accountable behaviour. Students learn about the importance of conducting experiments responsibly, considering the welfare of living organisms, and respecting the environment. This awareness instils empathy, encouraging students to consider the broader consequences of their actions.

Not every student chooses to make a “model volcano” for their science project. Some students prefer to challenge their inner science by choosing unconventional topics for science fairs like: “Does music affect plant growth?”
Such interesting project ideas will not just pique the curiosity for science as a subject but also provide a platform for students to unleash their creativity. An unconventional topic will widen their scientific horizon and will push them to think outside the box.
Participation in science fairs is a must for the growth of an innovative mindset. Such fun-in-learn activities are not only encouraged at the school level but also at the national and international levels. Some examples of national and international intervention in science fairs are:
