Top States That Have Most Percentage Of Scholarship Applications: NSP Report

A total of 127.19 lakh applications were made for scholarships across the nation in 2020-21, as per the report from National Scholarship Portal (NSP). Out of these just 66 per cent, that is 83.95 lakh applications got verified.

NSP offers all scholarships under one roof for general, Schedule Caste (SC), Schedule Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Class (OBC) category of students. NSP is a project of National e-Governance Plan (NeGP), that offers scholarships from Class 1 to even Doctorate programmes.

Careers360 analysed the top 10 states with the highest number of scholarship applications received in 2020-21, also the total number of verified among them and the percentage of the total disbursed amount of the scholarship.

Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have the highest population in the whole country, and they also have the highest number of scholarship applicants for the year 2020-21. But this is not true with all the states. States with a high populations like West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, or Rajasthan do not make it to the list of top 10 states with the highest number of scholarship applications.

Altogether, 19 states and seven UTs had less than three lakh applications and so they are merged as others in the list. They collectively had 20.4 per cent of the total application, which is 25.89 lakhs.

Disbursed Amount: State-wise

After scrutinizing all the applications received for the scholarships, a total of 83.95 lakhs applications were verified and that is just 66 per cent. The amount of the scholarships was distributed to all the verified applicants.

Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of verified applications that’s why it allotted the highest amount for scholarships. After Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Assam are the top states in terms of the amount distributed.

General Category Verified Application

Tamil Nadu holds the sixth position in the highest percentage of verified applications in total, but for general category it has the highest percentage of verified applications.

Schedule Caste’s Verified Application

With just 10.33 per cent of the total applications being verified, that is 8,235 out of 79,698 applied applications by SC students. Bihar has the lowest per cent of verified applications among all the states for the SC category.

Schedule Tribe’s Verified Application

Tamil Nadu holds the top position in terms of percentage of verified applications for general, SC as well as OBC, but for ST it’s position was in the seventh place among the 10 states that are compared here.

OBC’s Verified Application

Tamil Nadu holds the top rank in terms of OBC population, it also has the highest percentage of OBCs verified application.

Compared to the SC and ST category applications, all the states have a good number of verified applicants in the OBC category.

Among all the top 10 states OBC has the highest number of applications, around 48 lakhs, followed by the general category with around 44 lakhs applications. SC and ST have the lowest number of applied applications, which is 8.07 lakh and 1.6 lakh respectively.
