CBSE 12 English Paper 2025 Exam Pattern

CBSE class 12 English papers for elective and core have a total of 80 marks allotted, 20 marks for the internal assessment. The section-wise exam patterns are given below:

CBSE Class 12 English (Elective) Exam Pattern 2025

  • Section A - Reading: This is the very first section of the English elective subject, which contains a total of 20 marks with a Weightage of 25%. In this section, students will see two unseen passages (comprehension & analysis) with different types of questions.
  • Section B - Grammar & Writing: Section B of the English elective subject is the second highest weightage section with 28 marks. Applied grammar, analytical & discursive essays, and report/article writing types of questions are present in this section.
  • Section C - Literature: The last section of the English elective with a weight of 40 %, which is the highest in all three sections, contains the extract-based, short & long answer questions from prescribed texts.

CBSE Class 12 English (Core) Exam Pattern 2025

CBSE English core also contains three sections like the English elective. Section-wise types of questions and marks are given below:

  • Section A - Reading Skills: In this first section, two unseen passages (factual, descriptive, literary) types of questions are asked, which contain a total of 22 marks with a weight of 27.5 %.
  • Section B - Writing Skills: From this section, students will be tested in writing skills like notice, invitations, letter writing, and article/report Writing, which contains a total of 18 marks for this section.
  • Section C - Literature: In the last section of the English core paper, extract-based questions and short & long answer questions from Flamingo & Vistas textbooks are present. This section contains a total of 40 marks with a weightage of 50%.
