NIOS Transfer of Credit is a process that allows students to transfer their academic credits earned from other recognized education boards to the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Ex Secondary or Senior Secondary students from other recognized Boards of School Education who have passed at least one subject but did not qualify for the entire course may apply to NIOS admission to the same course and benefit from Transfer of Credit (TOC).

They can transfer credits for up to two subjects to NIOS and earn a certificate by completing the remaining subjects. If they were unable to complete their NIOS course within the last five years, they can transfer credits for up to four subjects by re-registering with NIOS. These features make Open Schooling a learner-centered system.

NIOS Transfer of Credit Dates

NIOS offers the option to transfer credits for up to four subjects for learners who have been unable to complete their courses within the past five years. To utilise this option, the learner must re-register with NIOS.

Eligibility for NIOS TOC

NIOS permits the transfer of credits from CBSE, CISCE, State Open Schools, and certain State Boards of Secondary and Senior Secondary Education. Students may benefit from the NIOS transfer of credits for up to two subjects, allowing them to obtain a certificate by passing the remaining subjects. The NIOS Transfer of Credit eligibility is as follows:

  • Ex-Students of NIOS: Ex-NIOS Secondary or Senior Secondary students whose five-year admission validity period has expired but who did not complete their course are eligible for re-admission to NIOS. If they passed a maximum of four subjects during their previous admission, they can transfer the credits for those subjects when seeking re-admission, provided they passed them within the last ten years. The re-admission is not available to current NIOS students whose five-year validity period has not yet expired.

  • Ex-Students of other Boards: Ex Secondary and Senior Secondary students from other Boards who have successfully passed at least one subject but have not completed the course may apply for credit transfer. A maximum of two subjects can be transferred, provided that these subjects were passed within the last five years. Credits will only be awarded for subjects that are part of the NIOS scheme of studies by the examination scheme.

General Rules and Procedures for Transfer of Credit in Stream-I & Stream-II

Candidates are encouraged to utilise the Transfer of Credit option during their NIOS registration. Nevertheless, in consideration of the student's interests, requests may also be accepted at a later stage, specifically following the announcement of results.

Procedure for TOC Option while Registration

  • Individuals seeking to utilise the Transfer of Credits (TOC) facility must complete the necessary information in the NIOS application form for admission, whether submitted online or offline, as appropriate.

  • They are also required to include the original mark sheet from which credits will be transferred, along with an attested photocopy of that document.

  • A fee must be paid according to the payment methods provided by the NIOS during the online registration process.

Guidelines for TOC Option while Registration

  • The NIOS Transfer of Credit (TOC) option must be exercised at the time of admission or readmission for students. Once this option is selected, it will be deemed final, and no changes or modifications will be permitted under any circumstances.

  • A maximum of four subjects passed from NIOS and up to two subjects passed from eligible parent Boards may be considered for transfer. The subjects for which the Transfer of Credit is requested must either be part of the NIOS curriculum or be deemed equivalent.

  • If the subjects selected for credit transfer lack practical components, while the same NIOS subjects include both theory and practical parts, or vice versa, these subjects will not be recognized as equivalent.

  • In a case where the distribution of theory and practical marks in the NIOS examination scheme differs from that of the previous institution, credit transfer may be granted with necessary adjustments to either the theory or practical marks. The NIOS authorities will determine how to adjust the marks.

  • The NIOS Transfer of Credit will only be permitted once, based on the original Mark Sheets, including those from compartment examinations from the same parent Board. The credits eligible for transfer must have been earned by the candidate within five years before re-admission.

  • A student from the eligible Boards who have applied for NIOS Transfer of Credit in more than two subjects will have only the two highest credits transferred, with all other factors being disregarded.

  • All subjects which are not eligible for NIOS Transfer of Credit must be successfully completed by the candidate in accordance with the established criteria.

  • NIOS Transfer of Credit will not be granted to students who have already passed.

Procedure for TOC Option After Declaration of Results

  • Candidates must submit their applications to the relevant Regional Centre of NIOS, ensuring that all required information is accurately completed.

  • They must include the original mark sheet from which credits are to be transferred, along with an attested photocopy of this document, as well as the original documents issued by NIOS.

  • The necessary fee should be remitted via Demand Draft made out to the Secretary, NIOS, and payable at the location of the respective Regional Centre of NIOS

Guidelines for TOC Option After Declaration of Results

  • Requests for the NIOS Transfer of Credit, accompanied by valid justifications, should be directed to the appropriate Regional Centre from which the candidate has taken the NIOS examination.

  • When submitting the request for the Transfer of Credit, the candidate must include the original marksheet issued by the parent Board, an attested photocopy of the NIOS mark sheet, and all original documents.

  • Such requests will only be entertained within three years from the year in which the candidate sat for the examination conducted by the parent Board.

  • All other regulations will remain unchanged, consistent with the options available during the registration process.
