The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a five-year curriculum designed for students aged 11-16. It aims to develop students' intellectual, social, emotional, and personal skills through a holistic approach to learning. The MYP is a rigorous academic program that fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It encourages students to explore the practical applications of their knowledge and connect their studies to real-world issues.
The MYP curriculum is used by 1,358 schools in 108 countries. Established in 1994 and updated in 2014 as MYP: New Chapter, the program provides a comprehensive education for students aged 11 to 16.
The MYP can be implemented in a variety of formats, including a five-year program or shorter options of two, three, or four years. Students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to transition to the IB Diploma Program or Career-related Program.
Five subject groups: Language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, and mathematics.
Interdisciplinary learning: Students explore connections between different subjects and real-world issues.
Community project: Students work on a project that benefits their local community.
Creativity, activity, service (CAS): Students participate in activities that develop their creativity, activity, and service to others.
Approaches to learning: Students develop critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management skills.
The MYP requires students to study all eight subject groups, including Language Acquisition, Language and Literature, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. This ensures a well-rounded learning experience that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and global awareness.

The MYP is accessible to students aged 11 to 16 attending schools that have been authorized to offer the program. The program is designed to be inclusive, benefiting students of diverse interests and academic backgrounds. While the MYP is typically implemented on a whole-school level, it can also be adapted to accommodate academically selective schools.
Each subject group employs four criteria to assess a student's proficiency. At the end of the year, teachers assign a final score, ranging from one to eight, for each criterion, reflecting the student's overall performance throughout the year.
Total Criteria Levels | Grade |
1-5 | 1 |
6-9 | 2 |
10-14 | 3 |
15-18 | 4 |
19-23 | 5 |
24-27 | 6 |
28-32 | 7 |
The scores from the four criteria are combined to determine a final grade on a scale of one to seven. This grade represents the student's overall proficiency in the subject, with one being the lowest achievement and seven the highest.
The MYP offers a comprehensive curriculum that encompasses eight subject groups, providing a well-rounded education for early adolescents.
Each subject group requires a minimum of 50 hours of instructional time per year throughout the program. In the final two years, the program allows for flexibility in subject group selection to accommodate local requirements and individual student interests.
In the final year of the program, students have the option to participate in MYP e-assessments. These assessments, validated by the IB, provide official grades based on both examinations and coursework. Students who complete external assessments are eligible to receive MYP course results and earn the prestigious IB MYP Certificate.
To officially participate in the IB Middle Years Programme, students must attend an authorized IB World School. To ensure a seamless transition, middle schools and high schools often collaborate closely.
Academic preparation: The MYP provides a strong foundation for further studies, including the IB Diploma Programme.
Personal development: Students develop important life skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication.
Global perspective: Students gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives.
Community engagement: Students contribute to their local community and develop a sense of social responsibility.
