LED is a semiconductor device that emits light when an electric current passes through it. The working of LED is based on the principle of electroluminescence, which is the process of converting electrical energy into light energy.
P-type and N-type semiconductors are arranged in close contact with one another to form an LED. Positively charged holes are in excess in the P-type semiconductor, while negatively charged electrons are in excess in the N-type semiconductor. The electrons and holes are pushed towards one another and recombine at the junction of the two semiconductors when a voltage is applied to the LED. The LED emits light as a result of the photons that are released as the electrons cross the junction.
The colour of the light emitted by an LED is determined by the semiconductor material used in its fabrication. For example, gallium arsenide phosphide (GaAsP) LEDs emit red or green light, while gallium nitride (GaN) LEDs emit blue or white light.

We have already discussed what LED is and how it works. Now, let's move on to the main part of this article: what makes LED lights highly energy-efficient?
One of the primary factors that make LED lights highly energy-efficient is their directional light emission. Unlike traditional incandescent bulbs that emit light in all directions, LED lights emit light in a specific direction. This means that LED lights can focus the light exactly where it is needed, reducing energy waste and increasing efficiency. The directional light emission is achieved by placing a tiny, plastic lens over the LED chip. This lens is designed to concentrate the light emitted by the LED chip rather than allowing it to disperse in all directions.
LED lights generate less heat than incandescent bulbs. This is due to the fact that standard incandescent bulbs convert only 10% of the energy they consume into light, with the remainder being dissipated as heat. LED lights, on the other hand, turn 95% of the energy they consume into light, with only 5% lost as heat. This means that LED lights use less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs.
Traditional incandescent bulbs release a significant amount of heat, which can be problematic in certain applications, such as in small or poorly ventilated spaces. This heat can also contribute to higher energy bills, as cooling systems have to work harder to maintain a comfortable temperature.
LED lights use less electricity than standard incandescent bulbs, making them extremely energy-efficient. This is because LED lights emit light from a semiconductor material, which takes far less electricity than heating a filament in typical incandescent bulbs.

Increased convenience: The longer lifespan of LED lights means that consumers don't have to replace their bulbs as frequently, which can be a convenient and time-saving option.
Higher quality lighting: The lifespan of LED lights is not only longer, but they also maintain their brightness and colour quality for a longer period. This means that the lighting remains consistent and high quality throughout the life of the bulb.

Because of their high energy consumption, short lifespan, and hazardous waste produced during disposal, traditional incandescent bulbs contribute to environmental damage. LED lights, on the other hand, have a significantly smaller environmental impact because of their energy efficiency, longer lifespan, and lesser toxic waste.
LED lights have a substantially lower environmental impact than traditional incandescent bulbs. During their lifetime, they require a lot of energy and emit a lot of greenhouse gases.
