NMMS Renewal refers to the annual continuation process for students who have already been selected under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) scheme and want to keep receiving the scholarship in the following academic years (up to Class 12). To keep receiving the NMMS scholarship from Classes 9 to 12, students need to hit certain academic and enrollment benchmarks every year. These NMMS renewal criteria can be checked below in the article. The NMMS scheme, run by the Ministry of Education (Govt. of India), provides a scholarship of Rs 12,000 per year to meritorious students from economically weaker sections studying from Class 9 to Class 12 in government, government-aided, or local body schools.

Once selected in Class 8, a student doesn’t need to appear in the NMMS exam again. But to continue receiving the scholarship each year (in Classes 9, 10, 11, and 12), they must fulfil certain NMMS eligibility conditions. These conditions are given below.
To renew the NMMS scholarship for Class 9 and 11, students must achieve a minimum of 55% marks in their final exams, with a relaxation to 50% for SC/ST students. For Class 10 renewal, a minimum of 60% marks is required in the board exam, with SC/ST students needing at least 55%. Finally, for Class 12 renewal, students must again secure a minimum of 55% marks in their Class 11 final exam, with the relaxed criterion of 50% for SC/ST students. It is important to note that all these specified marks must be obtained in the first attempt and not through compartmental examinations.
| Class | Minimum Marks for Renewal | SC/ST Relaxation | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|
9 | 55% | 50% | Internal school exam |
10 | 60% | 55% | Board exam |
11 | 55% | 50% | Internal exam |
12 | 55% | 50% | Final renewal year |
To continue receiving the NMMS scholarship, the student must be promoted to the next class without failing or taking a gap year. There should be no breaks allowed between academic sessions. If a student fails or discontinues their studies for any reason (other than medical), the NMMS scholarship will be permanently discontinued.
For a student's initial selection in Class 8, the annual family income must not exceed Rs 3.5 lakh, although this amount may vary slightly depending on the state. This income condition is not re-verified for subsequent renewals, unless a specific state authority mandates it.
The student must apply for NMMS renewal every year through the National Scholarship Portal within the deadline (by August or September).
Students can apply for NMMS renewal by following these steps

Click on “Login” and select the academic year (e.g., 2025–26)

Each state handles the NMMS exam application on its own, so you won’t find a single link for everyone. Instead, head over to your own state’s education board website—that’s where you’ll see the latest notification, the application form, and all the instructions you need. Schools usually get the official notice too, and most of the time, teachers walk students through the process. If applications are open where you live, your school will let you know what to do and how to do it. Still, the best way to get the right application form? Check your state education department’s website or just ask at your school. That way, you won’t miss anything.
