Listening to music and playing instruments is like a workout for the human brain, similar to physical workouts done for the body. Here are some detailed answers to those who want to know why music is important as a hobby and generally as well.
Playing an instrument turns on basically every single area of the brain simultaneously, especially the visual, auditory, and motor areas. Unlike the usual video games or puzzle games, the act of playing a musical instrument gives a profound feeling. This is because a musician uses the sense of vision, hearing, and touch, along with fine movements to play their instrument. This results in long-lasting positive effects on our brain.
Brain scans have shown a marked difference in the brain structure of musicians and non-musicians, especially in the corpus callosum which connects the right and the left brain. This massive bundle of nerves is found to be larger in the brains of musicians
In collaborative research titled Musical Training Shapes Structural Brain Development conducted by Kristina Hyde from McGill University and Gottfried Schlaug of Harvard, the researchers found that young children who completed 15 months of training on a musical instrument, showcased a more powerful structure and, enhanced brain functional changes than children who were not exposed to such training. Other than this, various research through time has provided insight into how simply listening to music can help individuals overcome anxiety, maintain healthy blood pressure and manage pain.
One area where most of these functional changes occur is in the hippocampus, a major and an important area in the brain which is involved in learning and memory. Neurogenesis, a process where new neurons are formed, and which helps build our learning abilities and our memory takes place in the hippocampus. Hence, one can infer that musical practice may enhance neurogenesis which can further improve learning and memory activity.
Playing a musical instrument is not only beneficial for overall health but activates every single area of the brain simultaneously. Especially the visual, auditory and sensory areas. While playing an instrument all these senses are put to use as the musician employs their sense of vision, hearing and touch. While playing an instrument, motor systems in the brain control the musician's movements.
This sound is processed by auditory circuitry, which can adjust signalling by the motor control centres. Fingers and hands send out sensory information to the brain. While reading the music sheet, the visual information is sent to the brain for interpreting next instructions from the motor centres.
According to a study titled Brain morphometry shows effects of long-term musical practice in middle-aged keyboard players by K. Amunts, Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine, Germany, a form of MRI known as structural MRI was used by doctors to study the white matter among musicians who play and practise on a regular basis. The findings from this study show that practising the piano is an effective way to enhance the structure of white matter. These regions are responsible for higher-level reasoning, planning and judgement skills that only come with experience. Researchers have speculated that sparse forebrain myelin (a substance that the white matter is made of) is one reason that teenagers do not have adult decision-making abilities. Such observations suggest that myelin is important to intelligence.

Various researches and studies have already claimed that music helps a student or any adult do their work more fluidly and help them complete their work and studies with a focused mindset.
