Boarding schools or residential schools are a very intrinsic part of the Indian education system. Remember the ancient gurukuls mentioned in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The need then and even today remains constant – that of providing superior education without distractions.
Compared to the other methods of teaching or studying any subject or skill, the boarding school system is very unique in its own way. These residential schools have modified themselves from time to time. Along with the quality of education, self management, discipline and other factors makes boarding more effective than regular schools.
Careers360 studied data for a total of 1,298 residential schools in India. These schools were affiliated to either ICSE, CBSE, IB boards and even multiple boards.
Out of the total schools, around 86 per cent of schools are affiliated with the CBSE board. While under seven per cent of these schools belong to the ICSE board. Only 57 schools are from IB and a total of 27 schools offer multiple boards which include IB, ICSE and CBSE on their campus.
Out of the total residential schools across India, around 1,126 schools are affiliated to CBSE board. States like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have the highest number of CBSE residential schools. Surprisingly, highest populated states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh do not make the list.
Five per cent of total residential schools are affiliated to the IB board. Karnataka has the highest number of IB schools in the country, followed by Maharashtra. Many states have only one IB school like-Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. While many states do not have a single IB school in their region.

Just 88 residential schools out of 1,298 are affiliated to the ICSE board, with most of these schools being in Uttarakhand. Four southern states of India are among the top 10 states with the most number of residential schools with ICSE board.
Many states have only one or two residential schools affiliated to the ICSE boards, such as Meghalaya, Telangana, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Residential schools offering multiple boards are affiliated to two or more educational boards. It offers its students a wider option to choose from and it also enriches the institute. Among the residential schools analysed here, just 27 schools have multiple education boards. Tamil Nadu has the highest number of such schools around India, 18.52 per cent.
Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh have only two schools each and seven states have just one such school. While many states do not have a single school who offers multiple boards option.
Haryana and Maharashtra are seen as the top states with the most number of residential schools for at least two boards. But none of the states or Union Territories have the highest number of schools for all the three boards.
