Kerala SSLC Exam Date:01 Feb' 26 - 14 Feb' 26
The Kerala SSLC examination results are prepared based on a 9-point grading system rather than traditional marks. Students receive a grade for each subject, which corresponds to a specific percentage range and grade point. To pass the Kerala SSLC exam, a student must secure a minimum of a D+ grade in all subjects. Students who fail to achieve this must appear for the SAY (Save A Year) exam.

Kerala Board uses a 9-point grading system. Each grade corresponds to a percentage range and a grade point. Students who achieve a score of 90% or higher are awarded the highest grade, A+, while those who score below 20% receive the lowest grade, E.
Percentage (%) | Grade | Grade Point | Meaning / Remark |
90 – 100 | A+ | 9 | Outstanding |
80 – 89 | A | 8 | Excellent |
70 – 79 | B+ | 7 | Very Good |
60 – 69 | B | 6 | Good |
50 – 59 | C+ | 5 | Above Average |
40 – 49 | C | 4 | Average |
30 – 39 | D+ | 3 | Marginal |
20 – 29 | D | 2 | Need Improvement |
Less than 20 | E | 1 | Needs Improvement / “fail‐type” category |
The Kerala SSLC CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is calculated based on the grade points that the student receives for each subject.
The formula to calculate the CGPA:
Find the Total Grade Point (TGP): Add the grade points of all subjects.
Calculate CGPA: Divide the TGP by the total number of subjects (which is 10).
CGPA = TGP / 10
Students can then convert their CGPA to an estimated percentage by multiplying it by 9.5.
For example, suppose a student gets these grades in 5 subjects:
Subject | Grade | Grade Point |
Malayalam | A+ | 9 |
English | A | 8 |
Maths | B+ | 7 |
Science | A | 8 |
Social Science | B | 6 |
Add all grade points, total grade points (TGP) = 9 + 8 + 7 + 8 + 6 = 38
Next, find average (CGPA), CGPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Number of Subjects
= 38 ÷ 5
= 7.6
Convert CGPA to percentage, Percentage( CGPA × 9.5)
= 7.6 × 9.5
= 72.2%
So in this example: CGPA = 7.6, Percentage = 72.2%
To successfully pass the exams, students must achieve a minimum Kerala SSLC passing mark in each subject. The following table details the maximum marks for each subject, as well as the passing marks needed:
Subjects | Total Score | Passing marks required |
First Language | 100 | 30 |
English | 100 | 30 |
Hindi | 50 | 15 |
Social Science | 100 | 30 |
Physics | 50 | 15 |
Chemistry | 50 | 15 |
Biology | 50 | 15 |
Mathematics | 100 | 30 |
Information Technology (Practicals) | 40 | 12 |
Total | 640 | 192 |
If a student is unable to achieve the minimum passing grade of D+ in one or more subjects, they will have the opportunity to appear for the SAY (Save A Year) examination. This is a supplementary exam that allows students to re-attempt the subjects they failed.
The SAY exams are held shortly after the main Kerala SSLC results are announced, giving students a chance to pass their subjects in the same academic year and avoid having to repeat the year.
