SOF NSO 2018 – SOF National Science Olympiad(NSO) is a scholarship exam conducted by Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) annually. The level 2 Exam has been conducted on February 9 and 10, 2019 and the result of the same has been declared on March 15, 2019. The Admit card for level 2 was made available in online mode on February 1, 2019. The NSO registrations for class 1 to 12 have been closed. The NSO 2018 level 1 was conducted on November 1, 15 and 27, 2018. Students registered for NSO 2018 by filling the form and submitting it along with the registration fee of Rs.125 before the last date which was one month before the chosen date of exam or October 1, 15 and 27 respectively. The registration form of SOF NSO was available to their respective schools. Students had to register through their respective schools only. Individual registrations by students were not accepted. NSO is an annual scholarship exam that aims at cultivating scientific reasoning and logical ability among school students. Every year, around 10 lakh students register for NSO. It is conducted at two levels:

Level 1: The first level of the test was organized in the respective schools of the participants during school hours.

Level 2: level 2 has been conducted for students of class 3 to class 12. The shortlisted students to second round include the following:

  • Top 5% of candidates, class-wise, who appear in the 1st level exam. In case of a tie of marks, due weightage to marks scored in different sections will be given.

  • Top 25 rank holders class wise & Zone wise.

  • Class topper where at least 10 students from a class appear in the exam & score 50% qualifying marks.

SOF has released the result of NSO 2018 for level 2 on March 15, 2019 in the online mode. Shortlisted students of level 1 sat for NSO level 2 which was conducted on February 9 and 10, 2019. The result of (level 1) was declared on December 26, 2018. Candidates can get to know their result by school authorities or can even check it online by clicking on the link provided above. 

NSO 2018 Eligibility Criteria

Students of classes 1st to 12th were eligible to appear for the 1st level NSO once a year.

How to register for NSO 2018?

  • Prospectus containing the Registration forms were sent to all schools registered with SOF. The registration forms must be returned to SOF by the schools, duly filled in along with the fee, by the due date.

  • The school’s coordinating teacher was responsible to generate the students’ Roll Numbers. The documents to be sent to the Foundation’s office includes a copy of these roll numbers along with the Students’ Registration Sheet (SRS) and School Registration Form (SRF).

  • Foundation was released the question papers and guidelines for conducting the examination. A minimum of 10 students needed to register from each school for the National Science Olympiad. Each date of the exam would have a separate question paper.

SOF NSO 2018 Exam Pattern

Students can follow the below exam pattern of NSO 2018 for better preparation.

(i)The level 1 of NSO is an objective-type test of 60 minutes duration comprising of 35 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 1 to class 4 and 50 objective-type (Multiple Choice) questions for class 5 to class 12.

(ii) The question paper consists of three sections:

For Class 1 to Class 10

Section-1: Logical Reasoning

Section-2: Science

Section-3: Achievers Section

For Class 11 and Class 12

Section-1: Physics/Chemistry

Section-2: Achievers Section

Section-3: Mathematics/Biology

(iii) There are separate question papers for each class.

(iv) NSO 2018 will be conducted in English.

(v) CBSE, ICSE/ISC and State Board syllabi are followed for setting the test papers.

NSO 2018 Syllabus

For better preparation of NSO exam, students must know the complete National Science Olympiad Syllabus and cover the topics covered. Students must note that questions of level-I Olympiad exams will consist of 60% questions from the current class syllabus and 40% from the previous class syllabus. Questions of level-II Olympiad exams will only be from the current class syllabus.

How to prepare for SOF NSO Level 1?

Students may refer to the points below for preparation of NSO 2018.

Know the syllabus and exam pattern: One must know the complete syllabus and exam pattern of NSO. Syllabus mentions the topics covered in exam whereas paper pattern will let you get familiar with the marking scheme, types of questions asked and time allotted. 

NSO Sample PapersDownload and practice as many previous years’ NSO question papers to get hang on the questions frequently asked and to get familiar with the difficulty level.

Understand the standard of questions: Questions would mostly be of varying difficulty level. The questions would test the logical and observational skills of the students besides the conceptual knowledge. There will be no direct questions but rather an application of a previously studied concept is more likely to form the base of a question.

Know the relevant books: One needs to thoroughly study the course books suggested by the school board (ICSE/ CBSE/ State Board). In addition to this, one can also refer to books available for Olympiad preparation by SOF itself. The books prescribed for NSO are as follows:

If your school is not registered with SOF still you can apply for the exam by requesting for prospectus by sending them an email and completing the form and send them before due date. You can get their email id from there official website. I am providing you the link of official website.

I would suggest you to go for MGT books as most of the question in question are found to br  directly form MGT books. one can get 45+ marks if he/she has done thise books

you can also go for previous years papers, workbooks an some mock tests that are avialable online also.

if you are for the first i would suggest you to proceed through sample paper of previous year!

and MTG books are handy there exercises contains almost all type of variety questions.
