Summer vacation is a time when every student wants to do away with books, bags, and everything that says school. It’s their time for a month-long study-free pampering. But all that time at hand and no structured plan to pass the days will lead to boredom or chaos, leading to lethargy and complete inertia. So let’s set our eyes on the goal, and ask ourselves, “What can I do this summer?” Well, Careers360 lists out your options.

Summer is the ideal season for camping or hiking, especially for children, because they have summer break, and it is the best way to keep them engaged in something that will actually help them in the long run.

Having said this, let’s look at summer activities other than painting and reading that can charm as well as entertain the young students of various age groups.

Nature Hike Trips

This is more for those who like the outdoors and love exploring. It can be a day-long camp or probably go on for a couple of days. Kids under the supervision of trained staff are taken to the campsite where they will learn and enjoy tasks that will prepare them for any situation they may encounter in the future.

Background wave

In the midst of nature, children can socialise with each other, inculcate teamwork, negotiating skills and even life skills. They will also become more aware of their environment as they explore nature's terrain. Such an activity can encourage their curiosity and love for the outdoors. It is advisable for parents to do your due diligence with regards to safety standards etc and allow the child to experience the greatest adventure of childhood.

Maze

This one you can do it yourself, in your garden, terrace or even your neighbourhood playground. Create a maze from either toilet paper or strings of paper or wool. Then ask kids to make their way through the maze within a stipulated time frame without touching the maze. Depending on the size of the maze, a competition can be held between at least 5-10 kids. You can also make teams and play to decide the winner. The winner of course is decided on who gets out of the maze faster without touching it. This is a really fun and entertaining summer holiday idea not only for kids but adults too.

Field Day

Having field days can turn out to be one of the best fun-filled experience you can give a child. One can easily have fun on a field day as there are so many things that can be done. For kids who prefer adventure and outdoor activities more children get to spend most of their days playing curated games that train them in life skills as well as age appropriate adventure sports. And of course the thrill of sleeping in tents. As long as it is held under supervision or inside the premises of the summer camp, it is absolutely safe to let kids have their fair share of fun.

Yoga Camps

For those who like a more quiet and calm environment, a yoga camp can do wonders. Children have spent long hours in sedentary poses during classes. Not to forget the consumption of junk food. Sitting down to study for long hours at a time and too much screen time can lead to an inactive lifestyle. This can develop into lifestyle health issues in adult life. Yoga helps to counterbalance this. Through regular practice of asanas, children (especially those kids that do not play outdoor sports often) can learn to have a healthy life. This helps to curb childhood obesity at a young age and maintain a healthy way of living.

Outdoor Campfires

An outdoor campfire in summer? Yes it may not be ideal, but it is possibly the one thing that marks the end of holidays. Get your kids and their friends together for a bonfire, sing camp songs, and hear and tell spooky ghost stories, add some fun campfire games. You can even ask the children to help you build the bonfire, of course under the supervision of experts. Making food over the campfire, making tents, camping in the wild or even in your backyard or your terrace is going to be a sensational experience for most children who have lived in a closed setting ever since the Covid-19 pandemic hit us.

To end the summer holiday with a bonfire would mark the end of vacation and beginning of the new academic session. What does it teach your kids? It teaches them about the circle of time, vacations eventually end, and one must prepare to take the challenges of the next academic year head on. A planned summer outing will help them build memories when they helped you or the volunteers in multiple tasks assigned to them. The fears they overcame, the friends they made. Through the next academic year, they will reminisce about the stories that were told. Some lessons they learnt during these days will help them through those tough times in the coming year. And who knows by the end of summer, your little drama queen or pirate king may actually turn around to be a different version of themselves. So, come on and look for these fun activities in your neighbourhood so that you have a structured plan for your kids’ vacation.
